This position requires a high degree of competency in genomic data analysis, and sound knowledge of genome biology and genomic experimental techniques.

Systems Analyst (Level III) - Specific Responsibilities:

  • Perform computational analyses of diverse genomics datasets in support of internal R&D projects, and JGI user community science projects
  • Communicate with internal and external scientists to determine analysis needs.
  • Exercise independent judgment in determining the appropriate methods and approaches for analyzing complex datasets.
  • Design and implement appropriate computational algorithms and workflows to perform analysis.
  • Collaborate with production informatics to facilitate automation of frequently used workflows.
  • Derive technical and biological insights from analyzed results.
  • Provide high quality professional reports on performed data analysis.
  • Present technical and analytical status in weekly meetings.
  • Follow prescribed practices for software version control, testing, and release engineering
  • Communicate with JGI and external scientists at all stages of analyses, and facilitate transfer of data and tools.

In addition to the above, the

Systems Analyst (Level IV) - Specific Responsibilities:

  • Under minimal supervision, work at a higher level of independence and responsibility in carrying out assignments
  • Work on complex projects requiring expert-level analysis and problem solving skills
  • Provide ultimate direction for development of new genomic analysis workflows.
  • Act as the primary point of contact for external collaborators.
  • Train and mentor other team members.
  • Additional Desired Responsibilities for Both Levels: Stay current with new emerging sequencing technologies.
  • Contribute to publications on sequenced genomes, developed tools, and approaches.

Systems Analyst (Level III) - Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Bioinformatics, Computer Science or related field with a minimum of 4-5 years of related work experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Strong background in genome biology and bioinformatics.
  • Broad knowledge of molecular biology techniques underlying DNA sequencing and analysis.
