Assists in developing and conducting research projects, including experimental design, data analysis, and documentation of experiment results. PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Designs, develops, and implements:
- Algorithms and computer software for analyzing high-throughput, massively parallel genomic data sets.
- Relational databases to store disseminate and analyze data, including verification of data submitted and recommendations for analyses.
- Web interfaces and queries to access relational databases; maintains web server.
- Independent research projects, including design of research protocols and development of procedures for the collection, verification, and management of data.
- Performs complex systems analysis of data and writes interpretative reports.
- Evaluates commercial and academic bioinformatics software.
- Trains other researchers on the everyday use of analysis software and research databases.
- Assists with grant preparation and reporting of methods, data, and results.
- Solves practical problems relating to difficulties with equipment or test subjects; suggests technical or procedural improvements in testing methods.
- Master’s degree or Ph.D. in computer science or related field.
- Analytical, reasoning, and problem-solving skills.
- Good understanding of computational biology, probabilistic models, statistics, machine learning, and discrete mathematics.
- Ability to analyze and interpret large complex data sets, such as sequences, microarray gene expression studies, single cell RNA sequencing, human genetic studies, and model organism studies, and to communicate data in a clear, concise manner.
- Expertise in standard bioinformatics tools.
- Working knowledge of regulatory networks, hidden Markov models and profile methods, human genetics (SNP, etc.), and complex systems analysis; expertise in scientific programming languages (e.g., Java), scripting languages (e.g., PERL, Vbscript), database management software (Oracle, Structured Query Language [SQL] Server), and the SQL, HTML, ASP, and CGI in a UNIX/Linus and Windows environment; expertise in standard molecular biology techniques (RNA perpetration, PCR, qRT-PCR).
- Expertise in molecular and functional genomic techniques is desired.
