Bioinformaticist Project Scientist (Plant Fungal Genomics) – 80042 Organization: GN-Genomics The Department of Energy (DOE) Joint Genome Institute (JGI) in Walnut Creek, CA (a division of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory) offers a unique opportunity as a Bioinformaticist Project Scientist to be part of the research team responsible for plant functional genomics at the JGI. Under general supervision of the principal investigator, you will perform research relevant to the missions of the Eukaryotic super program. The position will work as part of a team including biologists, bioinformaticians, and computer scientists to develop a plant functional genomics program at theDOE Joint Genome Institute. The role will study the effects of transgenes on abiotic stress tolerance and publish scientific manuscripts describing results. Responsibilities: • Analyze sequence datasets from different grass species, natural accessions and transgenic lines. • Perform comparative analysis across entire genomes/transcriptomes to identify putative genetic differences responsible for phenotypic variation. • Design and perform RNA-Seq experiments to determine the effect of transgenes on cold tolerance, stress tolerance and perenniality. • Develop methods to improve data analysis. • Interface with collaborators, JGI staff, management, and sponsors at other national laboratories and assist other scientists in analyzing genome/transcriptome data. • Summarize research results and publish in peer review journals; contribute to scientific research papers and reports. • May provide general bioinformatic support to the plant functional genomics program. • May assist with funding applications and proposals as needed. • May mentor and train undergraduates, graduate students, technical staff and other group members as necessary. Qualifications: • PhD in Biology or related field plus experience in bioinformatics and molecular biology, or overall equivalent experience • Expertise in the analysis of whole genome diversity through genome sequencing • Demonstrated experience with Python, PERL or similar programming languages • Ability to document and summarize research results for presentation and publications with a proven record of publications in peer-reviewed journals • Proficient analytical and organizational skills • Excellent and effective interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills • Ability to work independently as well as part of a diverse team • Proficient computer skills, including experience using UNIX/Linux, Mac and/or PC operating systems • A commitment to and demonstrated ability to perform collaborative research in a team environment • Preferred – Some background in grass biology is highly desirable Note: This is a one-year term appointment that can be extended to a maximum of five years based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds, and ongoing needs. Work will be performed at the DOE Joint Genome Institute (JGI), located in Walnut Creek, CA. The position may require occasional travel, weekend, and after-hours work. A background check is required.
