Job Description:
The Bioinformatics Analyst will work as a member of a bioinformatics research team on the development and enhancement of the NIAID-funded Influenza Research Database (IRD; www.fludb.org ) and Virus Pathogen Resource (ViPR; www.viprbrc.org ). IRD and ViPR will be enhanced through algorithm, infrastructure and workflow development to mine, analyze, and visualize virology research and surveillance data. The Bioinformatics Analyst will contribute to the development and enhancement of IRD and ViPR by participating in the following activities: •Designing conceptual database models and other bioinformatics resource features •Conveying user requirements and design concepts to a team of software engineers in order to facilitate system development activities •Developing data standards and controlled vocabularies/ontologies for various system components •Identifying and capturing public sources of relevant data •Manual curation of information from the scientific literature •Developing novel analytical algorithms and software tools for comparative genomics analysis, transcriptomics and proteomics enrichment analysis, and biological pathway and network systems analysis •Performing complex data mining analysis related to comparative genomics and phylogenetic evolution •Performing host-pathogen systems analysis •Developing database and analytical workflows to identify significant sequence variations. Qualifications: Successful candidates should have a Master’s of Science or Ph.D. degree in the life sciences, public heath or computer science with strong familiarity with bioinformatics, computational biology, genomic analysis and general life sciences research.
