Job Description:
The Department of Neuroscience at the University of Virginia is seeking a Bioinformatics Analyst to contribute to projects that use a systems biology approach to studying the complex interplay between the nervous and immune systems in neurological disorders. The position is in the Kipnis laboratory within the center for Brain Immunology and Glia (https://med.virginia.edu/big/), and the analyst will be under the supervision of Drs. Jonathan Kipnis and Christopher Overall. The center is at the forefront of neuroimmunology, with excellent experimental labs, which will give the incumbent a singular opportunity to tightly couple computation with experiment. The primary responsibilities of the analyst will be (1) to develop pipelines for analyzing large omics datasets (e.g., bulk RNA-seq) that will run on UVA's high-performance cluster, (2) to process datasets generated by the Kipnis lab and other labs in the BIG center, and (3) to contribute to the development of bioinformatics software for internal use and for publication.

Qualified candidates must have a Bachelors degree in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Data Science, Biostatistics, Computer Science, or a related field. A Masters is preferable. One year of experience programming (preferably R/Bioconductor and Python) is required, as is experience with analyzing omics data, such as transcriptomics (RNA-seq and microarrays), protein-DNA binding (e.g., ChIP-seq), DNA methylation, and DNA variation. The analyst should be team-oriented and have good communication skills, as there will be frequent interaction with experimental biologists. Student experience may be considered. Proficiency in Linux is expected.

This position is restricted and contingent upon the continuation of funding.
