Job Description:
Under the direction of the Medical Informatics Director, the Bioinformatics Analyst is part of a multi-disciplinary team responsible for the development, implementation, and optimization of analysis software required for genomics-based testing in the Diagnostic Laboratories and the Blood Research Institute. In the diagnostic laboratories, the Bioinformatics Analyst will implement a bioinformatics pipeline to directly support clinical diagnostic testing using next-generation sequencing (NGS) assays and other diagnostic technologies. The Bioinformatics Analyst also performs operational bioinformatics tasks to support the daily laboratory workflow. The successful candidate will work with third-party software providers, product development scientists, laboratory directors, Medical Informaticists, and laboratory information services staff to build robust analysis pipelines for the interpretation and clinical reporting of NGS data. The Bioinformatics Analyst will also work with Blood Research Institute faculty to support basic and translational research projects that utilize genomic data.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Develops, implements and refines bioinformatics pipelines and analytical tools for analyzing and visualizing NGS data. Validates and qualifies software packages and applications for clinical and research use.

• Performs analysis of NGS data.

• Performs operational bioinformatics tasks to support daily laboratory workflow

• Works with product development scientists, laboratory staff, and directors to support clinical test development using NGS technology.

• Collaborates with Medical Informaticists and Laboratory Information Services to build interfaces for clinical reporting of NGS data.

• Maintains databases of NGS data, including variant calls and clinical interpretations.

• Supports Blood Research Institute investigators with the analysis of NGS data.

• Interacts with local informatics groups (MCW, CHW, etc.) and third-party software vendors to design robust informatics solutions for BloodCenter.

EDUCATION

• Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Engineering, Computer Science or Bioinformatics

• Master’s Degree in related field preferred

EXPERIENCE

• Minimum 1 year experience with next generation sequencing analysis and methods

• Minimum 1 year experience using and developing bioinformatics tools

• Experience working with third-party vendor supplied software packages

• Experience with reporting tools and analytics

• Experience working in a structured development environment and quality systems preferred

• Experience working in a clinical/industry setting preferred

• Experience creating algorithms to conduct specialized downstream bioinformatics analyses with sequencing data

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:

• Demonstrated leadership skills

• Strong foundation in software requirements analysis

• Foundation in computational algorithm design

• Knowledge of programming and scripting languages such as R, Perl, Python, Java, and/or C++Well developed interpersonal and teamwork skills

• Continuous improvement tool sets and methodologies

• Excellent oral and written communication skills

• Strong critical thinking and analysis skills

• Working knowledge and experience with various database systems a plus

• Working knowledge of clinical laboratory and research settings and protocol/experiment design preferred
