Job Description:
The Eddy/Rivas laboratory, a computational biology research group with Harvard University and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (eddylab.org) is seeking a Bioinformatics Analyst to join the software development team to develop two widely used software packages for biological sequence analysis: HMMER (hmmer.org) and Infernal (eddylab.org/infernal). The team is working on the next major releases of these tools, and this position also offers the opportunity to participate in fundamental computational biology algorithms research.

Responsibilities include:
Benchmarking and testing biological applications of the HMMER and Infernal tools Development of HMMER and Infernal’s command line interfaces, output formats, and interfaces to other tools (such as Galaxy, Bioconductor, BioPython, BioPerl) Writing user-oriented documentation and tutorials Managing code releases and availability to the community
Basic Qualifications
BS in Biological Sciences. 3+ years bioinformatics experience.

Additional Qualifications
Expertise in biological sequence analysis using HMMER and Infernal software, and databases such as Pfam, InterPro, and Rfam

Expertise in scientific data analysis in environments such as Galaxy and Bioconductor, and data exchange in formats such as JSON

Expertise in UNIX (Mac OS/X or Linux) and in scripting (Python or Perl)

Expertise in software testing and release (github), and writing web-based documentation (HTML, CSS, Jekyll)

Strong verbal and written communication skills and the ability to work well as part of a small but geographically-distributed team

Additional Information
This is a four-year term position from date of hire with possible term extension based on funding.
