Job Description:
The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB), School of Medicine - Institute for Genome Sciences (IGS) is currently recruiting for a Bioinformatics Analyst I - Human Disease Ontology. The Bioinformatics Analyst I will contribute to biomedical ontology research projects and scientific analysis of biomedical disease datasets relevant to cancer, genetic, complex and environmental diseases using a variety of ontology software applications. Generate, annotate, gather or analyze data and prepare for further analysis and integration into the Human Disease Ontology (http://www.disease-ontology.org ).

Essential Functions:

  • Following established procedures for biomedical ontology development and curation, add value to cancer mapping data generated by data repositories and stakeholders through annotation, curation, and quality assurance.
  • Perform mapping analysis of disease related data to biomedical ontologies.
  • Integrate and analyze data from data contributors, coordinate and analyze community disease term requests.
  • Perform disease data mining and synthesis activities using various internal resources, public databases and publications.
  • Organize disease data with other relevant data types into the DO project database, DO website, or graphic presentations for publication and web presentation.
  • Participate in community outreach and training.
Qualifications:

Education: Bachelors in Life Sciences, including fields such as biology, medical informatics, computer science, bioinformatics, ontology development or related fields. Master’s degree preferred.

Experience: Prior biomedical ontology development and UNIX experience, Protégé experience is strongly preferred.
