PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The Sequencing Facility bioinformatics group within the Advanced Biomedical Computing Center (ABCC), provides support for investigators within the NCI Center for Cancer Research. As part of the Information Systems Program at the Frederick National Lab, the ABCC provides technology development, scientific consultation, collaboration and training, and high-performance computing support to the NCI and NIH scientists and staff. The Sequencing Facility (SF) has been established to manage the operation of multiple platforms for next-gen and third-generation sequencing in support of NCI investigators. The SF provides services to many CCR investigators and their collaborators, processes several thousand samples and generates tens of trillions bases of sequencing data annually using such instruments as the HiSeq 2500, HiSeq 2000, NextSeq 500, PacBio and MiSeq

JOB DESCRIPTION

The Bioinformatics Analyst II will be responsible for providing bioinformatics support within the SF including the management and analysis of high throughput next-generation sequencing data from Illumina and other NGS platforms. Responsible for troubleshooting instrument run issues, data processing issues, and sample performance issues. Analyst will evaluate alternative analysis applications as well as software pipelines. Responsibilities include performing NGS data QC, primary and secondary analysis; lab records management including SF LIMS system, and archiving sequencing data and analysis result files. Individual will work effectively as a member of a team while following sound scientific practices and maintaining effective documentation of activities and analysis.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • Possession of a Bachelors degree in biomedical science/bioinformatics/math/computer related field from an accredited college or university or four (4) years related experience in lieu of degree.
  • Foreign degrees must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency.
  • In addition to education requirements, a minimum of four (4) years related experience in a biological research laboratory environment with a strong background in bioinformatics application development, database management or utility programming.
  • Must possess experience in genomic and sequence analysis, construction of data processing pipelines, and quality control/quality assurance analysis.
  • Hands-on experience in next generation sequencing analysis, including data quality assessment, sequencing data assembling, mapping, variant calling, and expression analysis.
  • Proficiency in Unix/Linux scripting, and programming languages such as PERL, python, and hands-on experience with commercial and open-source bioinformatics and NGS data analysis tools is required.
  • This position is subject to obtaining a Public Trust Clearance.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Masters or Ph.D. degree preferred.
  • Experience in Illumina sequencing technology and molecular biology.
  • Experience using high performance computing systems for NGS analysis.
  • Experience in data integration and application development.
  • Familiarity with publicly available data sources such as ENCODE, Ensembl, TCGA, 1000 Genomes, etc.
  • Proven success in independent efforts and delivering high quality data with biological relevance in a team environment.
