The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB), Institute for Genome Sciences (IGS) is recruiting for a Bioinformatics Analyst II. The selected candidate will contribute to -omics research projects and scientific analysis of the data generated by those projects using a variety of database and software applications. The candidate we are seeking will have previous experience analyzing -omics-related data sets (transcriptomics, metagenomics, comparartive genomics, etc.). The candidate we are seeking will have previous experience analyzing -omics-related data sets (transcriptomics, metagenomics, comparartive genomics, etc.). The qualified candidate will have demonstrated organizational skills and project management skills. Essential Functions:
- Follow established protocols for running transcriptomics analyses, microbiome-related analyses, and other -omics analyses as needed.
- Operate in a Linux environment to run bioinformatics tools and access/store data.
- Engage in limited scripting (e.g. shell, Perl, Python) to perform basic tasks.
- Interact with collaborators and clients to understand the needs of projects and report results of analyses.
- Present work at group meetings as well as occasional larger scientific meetings.
- Travel to conferences/meetings/workshops as required for specific projects and/or training opportunities.
- Balance and prioritize work assignments so as to make progress on multiple tasks/projects at the same time.
- Participate in community outreach and training.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Life Sciences or related field, i.e., Biology, Molecular Biology, Genetics, Biochemistry, or Bioinformatics. Masters or Ph.D preferred. Experience: Two (2) years omics-related analysis experience. Master’s degree in a related field may be substituted for two (2) years of experience. Preferred Experience: Work experience using a Linux/Unix command-line environment, knowledge of Python or Perl scripting for routine tasks such as parsing and file formatting.
