Job Description:
Purpose: Work as part of a multidisciplinary team providing service and support to the intramural and extramural research programs of the Genomic Sciences and Precision Medicine Center (GSPMC) and the Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute (CTSI). The CTSI operates a large and comprehensive data warehouse for which novel tools are desired for data standardization and visualization in order to assist interpretation and knowledge generation. The GSPMC partners with the CTSI to provide bioinformatics and genomics expertise to complement the clinical and medical informatics project of the CTSI. Identification of collaborative projects between these two centers is desired. The successful candidate will analyze data generated from the CTSI data warehouse and, as a part of collaborative team, develop and implement research studies and novel tools for data standardization, visualization, and interpretation.

Primary Functions:

  • Understands Natural Language Processing (NLP) principles, implementation, and the interpretation of results. Independent troubleshooting and feedback for CTSI tools: i2b2, Honest Broker, and others.
  • Develops, implements, and refines workflows and tools for analyzing NLP data and algorithems. Experience in EMR/EHR processing for data and knowledge extraction.
  • Maintains a professional level of knowledge for at least one focused topic in medical and/or clinical informatics, to properly analyze data and maintain state-of-the-art analysis workflows and processes
  • Adapts existing NLP and EMR tools, visualization packages, and database/annotation resources for research projects to independently and accurately perform research analysis.
  • Work in a collaborative consulation team to understand the needs of clincal and research collaborators. Facilitate the implementation of projects and/or workflows identified from these consultations.
  • Determine accurate phenotypic models for clinical questions including NLP, builling, and laboratory test data.
  • Abstracting and coding clinical data using standard classification systems, and processing requests for patient health information
  • Works with database and system administrators to implement and optimize methods for data visualization.
  • Contributes to publications by generating figures, tables, and text; accurately illustrate methods & results.
  • Operates, and troubleshoots, and improves analytic tools; notifies Supervisor when complex problems occur.

Knowledge – Skills – Abilities

This position requires strong cross-disciplinary and analytical skills, working knowledge of NLP and EHR data mining, as well as experience using computational methods, databases, and software. Working experience with machine learning tools and algorithms for Big Data (characterized by the four “Vs”) standardization and harmonization. Familiarity with ontology systems and established tools is preferred. Candidates must demonstrate an ability to critically read, understand, and interpret data from scientific publications. A background and demonstrated experiences in informatics and Data Science is preferred. The successful candidate will be organized, detail-oriented, capable of maintaining focus on the big-picture (why we are doing what we are doing), and an effective written and verbal communicator.
