Job Description:
The Pharmacodynamic Assay Development / Implementation Section (PADIS) is responsible for identification of biomarkers of response to new targeted agents entering clinical trials in the Developmental Therapeutics Program of the National Cancer Institute. The scope of work includes assay design, development, validation, fitness for purpose testing, transfer of assays to clinical laboratories, and clinical specimen analysis when required. PADIS facilitates mechanistic and performance analysis of putative anti-cancer agents, diagnostic tests, and therapeutic interventions to clinical applications, including distinct molecular signatures for cancer, refined molecular assays, and state-of-the-art imaging techniques that are too high-risk for industry or academia to pursue. The analyst is responsible for: -Integrating computational methods to facilitate the acquisition and analysis of data from cell and tissue images generated on multiple platforms including light and confocal microscopy fluorescence imaging (multiplexed), whole slide scanning. -Facilitating the accumulation and maintenance of biological data including developing applications that process this information into searchable databases for purposes of analysis, calculation, and presentation -Specifying performance requirements to subcontractors for software scripts used in acquiring images and advises departmental scientists in same. -Independently performing research of moderate level problems under the review of a scientist or higher-level analyst . -New assignments, program goals, and objectives are reviewed with the supervisor and are carried out with minimal direct supervision. -Analyst is expected to exercise independent judgment in developing and modifying methods and techniques for solving problems. -May be responsible for conducting complete projects of moderate scope or portions of larger projects Unusual matters or procedural problems are resolved in consultation with a higher level analyst or supervisor. Qualifications: BASIC QUALIFICATIONS: To be considered for this position, you must minimally meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below: -Possession of a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., Biomedical Science, Life Sciences, Engineering, Mathematics, Informatics, etc.) from an accredited college or university according to the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) or four (4) years of experience in lieu of degree. -Foreign degrees must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency. -A minimum of two (2) years of progressively responsible, relevant experience. -Must be able to obtain and maintain a Security Clearance. Candidates must be able to: -Function independently in a highly complex, fast-paced research laboratory, requiring originality and judgment, -Collect imaging data on microscopy and slide scanning platforms, -Evaluate the suitability and quality control of both primary data and computational methods using control and calibrator values, and -Convert digital image data to quantitative, graphic outputs using, among others, Definiens and Spotfire Software. Demonstrated experience in: -Robotics and other methods for high-throughput collection or analysis of images and metadata, -Database administration or development (SQL required), -Software integration with instrumentation, -Development or enhancement of in-house or third party computational tools, -Handling large data sets, and -Methods for storing, analyzing, and dissemination of image information. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates with these desired skills will be given preferential consideration: -Certified training in Image Analysis, High Content Analysis, or Confocal Microscopy. -A minimum of four (4) years related experience in a laboratory environment with at least two (2) years direct experience in confocal microscopy and at least two (2) years direct experience in quantitative image analysis. -Evidence of performance by publication in a refereed scientific journal. -Experience in analysis of human tissues and cytology using multiplex fluorescence microscopy. -Familiarity with tissue processing and immunostaining methods. -Expertise with Nikon Elements, Definiens, and Spotfire software. -Working knowledge of oncology at the laboratory research level. -Knowledge of GLP and HIPAA regulations.
