Job Description:
Biological insight requires the interpretation of new findings in the context of previous work. Calico is seeking a strong computational biologist / bioinformatics specialist to work closely with our preclinical and translational scientists to help deconvolute biological pathways and understand the role that different components (such as proteins) play in the context of aging and age-related disease. As a member of the team, you will help develop novel therapeutic strategies, organize knowledge around diverse biological targets, provide clinically valuable insights to our scientists, and support discovery efforts around novel therapeutic candidates. To do so, you will survey the literature and incorporate structured and unstructured data from a range of available data sources; you will integrate findings from those to help inform our understanding of the biology underlying aging and age-related diseases, and the specific pathways that play a role in those processes. You will work closely with our team of basic and translational scientists to use these insights to inform their work. You will also work with engineers and others on the team to define and develop tools that can facilitate this type of discovery. You will join a team with diverse, cross-functional skills, which includes engineers, data scientists, biomedical scientists, and computational biologists.

Position requirements:

  • Deep knowledge of modern techniques in bioinformatics and/or biostatistics, including in identifying the role of pathways and their components in large, complex biological and clinical data sets
  • 4+ years of experience in computational biology, including at least 2 years of hands-on work experience (either in an academic environment or in industry), including experience with biological data analysis tools and databases (e.g., dbGAP, GTeX, GEO, Ensembl, GO, NCBI, 1000 Genomes, ENCODE)
  • Coding skills in at least one relevant scripting language (Python, R, Matlab, etc.)
  • Understanding of biological and/or medical experimental design methodology, and ability to assess the strength of evidence supporting a scientific finding; experience in evaluating medical clinical trial data is desired
  • Track record of effective collaboration in a cross-functional environment with people of diverse backgrounds
  • Degree in Biological Science, Bioinformatics, Medicine, Biostatistics or related field, or equivalent practical experience
  • Exposure to structural biology / docking / drug modeling is a plus but not required
