Bioinformatics and Computational Biology Consultant (Research Scientist I)

Job Description:
The College of Agricultural Sciences at CSU seeks a Bioinformatics & Computational Biology Consultant to support bioinformatics and computational biology research and instruction within the College by providing analysis, consulting and bioinformatics support. The CAS Bioinformatics and Computational Biology Consultant is a full-time, twelve-month administrative professional position reporting to the CSU College of Agriculture Associate Dean for Research. This newly created position will be responsible for developing a successful bioinformatics and computational biology consulting service to support CSU researchers. The appointment will initially be structured as 60% consulting (service), 20% collaborative research, and 20% teaching/instruction, but can be negotiated. Affiliate faculty status with a relevant department within the College is possible, and would allow for co-advising of graduate students.

This position is classified as a Research Scientist/Scholar I, with annual reviews and opportunity for promotion within the Research Scientist/Scholar career ladder. The Consultant will be reviewed annually, with an expectation of a five year appointment.

The CAS Bioinformatics and Computational Biology Consultant will provide (1) expertise to the CAS research community in bioinformatics experimental design and analysis, (2) state of the art collaborative bioinformatics/computational biology expertise and service for proposal development and advancement of ‘omics-based research, and (3) instruction, in the form of classes, workshops or one-on-one training.

The ideal candidate must be an effective communicator who is able to convey complex informatics and computational approaches to non-experts. Candidates must demonstrate expertise in bioinformatics and computational biology and should be strong collaborators.

Required Job Qualifications:

• PhD from an accredited institution in a relevant field (such as Bioinformatics, Math, Statistics, Microbiology, Computer Science, Biology, Plant Pathology, Plant Biology, Biological Engineering, Animal Sciences, Ecology, Entomology, or Genetics) at the time of application.

• Demonstrated knowledge of bioinformatics and computational biology, and basic knowledge of relevant computer programming languages (such as Python, R, etc).

• Proven excellence in verbal and written communication skills, including a strong scientific, peer-reviewed publication record in bioinformatics and/or computational biology-related topics.

Preferred Job Qualifications:

• Post-doctoral or other relevant experience in bioinformatics and/or computational biology.

• Knowledge of next-generation sequencing, systems modeling, multi-omics data integration, and/or machine learning as they relate to biological research.

• Evidence of capacity for consulting and demonstrated ability to initiate communication and follow through on progress and results from complicated projects or tests.

• Demonstrated excellence in collaborative communications.

• Evidence of successful collaboration and ability to engage in multidisciplinary research projects.

• Potential for excellence in teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

• Desire and ability to advance the College’s commitment to diversity and inclusion through consulting, collaborative research, and teaching with relevant programs, goals and activities.

• Communicate effectively with non-computational researchers and be time-responsive

Duty/Responsibility:

• Provide consultation and guidance in experimental design, available options for data acquisition, data analysis and interpretation. Communicate effectively with non-computational researchers.
• Identify and implement bioinformatic tools for the analysis of data and develop custom workflows.
• Contribute to grant writing in support of CAS faculty.
• In collaboration with CAS IT, support workflows and pipelines on CAS IT and CSU computational resources.
• Be knowledgeable about the most current publications on new bioinformatic approaches as well as benchmarking and validating of methods.
