Job Description:
The Pezzolesi lab is seeking a bioinformatics data analyst to assist in analyzing high-throughput genetic data as part of several research projects that aim to investigate the basis of diabetes, diabetes-related complications, and chronic kidney disease using molecular biology, next-generation sequencing technology, and bioinformatics. The bioinformatics data analyst will be responsible for working independently, as well as part of a team, performing advanced genetic analysis (e.g., using GWAS and NGS analytical methods), and evaluating and reporting the results of these analyses. The bioinformatics data analyst will assist in the development and implementation of analytical workflows, evaluating data quality, analyzing data, validating results, and seeking ways to improve the analytical workflows. The bioinformatics data analyst may also assist in collecting and analyzing data, some of which may be obtained from retrospective medical record data or surveys.

Responsibilities:

Essential Functions:

1. Performs analysis of high throughput genomic data, including designing and implementing analytical workflows.

2. Contribute to the development of protocols and bioinformatic and statistical analysis plans.

3. Assist in the development and implementation of data analysis workflows to support other lab activities and prepare reports summarizing results.

4. Provide technical assistance and expertise on bioinformatic analyses.

5. Conducts literature reviews to obtain abstracts and information to be utilized in research and workflow development.

6. May oversee the operations of bioinformatics analyses of other lab members.

Minimum Qualifications:

-Bachelor’s of Science degree with a focus on Bioinformatics, Biostatistics, Computer Science or Molecular Biology or equivalency (2 years related work experience may be substituted for 1 year of education). Two years of experience in genomic data analysis required. Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills also required.

-Software development experience in object oriented programming using Java, Python, and or C++ and familiarity with molecular biology, genomics and some biostatistics helpful.

-Master of Science degree or PhD in Bioinformatics, Computer Science and/or Life Sciences preferred.

Preferences:

Bachelor’s degree in Genetics and programming experience (Unix, R, SAS) is also allowed.
