Job Description:
The Division of Epidemiology within the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Utah seeks a Bioinformatics Data Analyst/Epidemiologist to join its bioinformatics research team. As one of the Analyst/Epidemiologist team, the successful candidate will evaluate the relationship between medical conditions and their causes and medical interventions and their outcomes through data analysis. The selected candidate will collaborate within a research team completing all aspects of a project through study design, regulatory approvals, project management, statistical analysis, as well as interpretation and dissemination of results. The research team focuses on patient populations to test hypotheses with the goal of improving clinical care. The Analyst/Epidemiologist team will work within a variety of specialties that include medical, social, environmental, genetic, psychological, and other diverse areas of study. The research team combines the best of traditional epidemiologic methods along with advanced analytics and informatics methods in creative, cross-disciplinary activities. We subscribe to the philosophy of open data science and look to build upon the work of others and make our work as transparent and community-driven as possible. This includes the use of standards, open source software, and community-driven common data models.

Responsibilities

Essential Functions:

•Manage studies by planning, assisting with study design, developing statements of work and analysis plans, monitoring progress, evaluating data quality, analyzing data, validating results, and seeking ways to improve workflow.

•Contribute to the development of protocols and statistical analysis plans.

•Provide support of research activities through data analyses, statistical modeling, reporting, and communication of results.

•Collect and analyze data—which may include observations, retrospective medical record data, interviews, surveys, and samples—to find disease mechanism or other health issues.

•Communicate findings to health practitioners, policymakers, and the public.

•Provide technical and scientific assistance and expertise on epidemiology and collaborate with Federal, state, and local partners and non-government stakeholders.

•Guide pharmacoepidemiology studies in support of medical product safety research under the direction of senior staff.

•Must demonstrate excellent communication and analytical skills as well as possess a high level of self-motivation, initiative and attention to detail.

•Ability to work independently and as a team player, to work on multiple projects under pressure and with tight timelines.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s of Science degree with a focus on Bioinformatics, Biostatistics, Computer Science or Molecular Biology or equivalency (2 years related work experience may be substituted for 1 year of education). Two years of experience in genomic data analysis required. Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills also required.
  • Software development experience in object oriented programming using Java, Python, and or C++ and familiarity with molecular biology, genomics and some biostatistics helpful.
  • Master of Science degree or PhD in Bioinformatics, Computer Science and/or Life Sciences preferred.
  • Applicants must demonstrate the potential ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined in the position description.
  • Preferences:

    A MS, MPH, or relevant education and/or equivalent training in health service research, epidemiology, informatics, biostatistics, or a related field highly preferred. Post-graduate or post-doctoral training or relevant real-world experience in conducting health service research with experience in biostatistics or epidemiology is preferred. Strong study design and data analysis skills and proficiency with one or more statistical applications (R (preferred), Stata, SAS) are strongly preferred. Demonstrated knowledge of SQL is preferred.
