Job Description:
Would you like to take what you’ve learned and make a real difference in people’s lives? Would you like to be on a team that supports breakthroughs in health and technology – precision medicine, pharmacogenomics, big data? Would you like an opportunity to work with government, academia, and industry partners analyzing topics like effectiveness of molecular diagnostic testing and prediction of adverse events? As a bonus – do you enjoy the outdoors or skiing the greatest snow on earth? If so, come join us! We are a team of dedicated professionals using advanced analytics and informatics tools to perform health services and outcomes research.

Our team is at the intersection of many complimenting disciplines – including informatics, epidemiology, data science, and biostatistics. Our partners bring together diverse opinions, theories, and expectations that provoke innovative approaches to problems. The Division of Epidemiology within the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Utah seeks a highly motivated, independent Bioinformatics Data Analyst to join our dynamic, fast-paced collaborative research team. The individual will join an established, progressive team of innovators conducting research within the University of Utah and for the Department of Veterans Affairs, which has one of the largest electronic medical record databases in the world.

A successful candidate will collaborate and conduct health outcomes and health service research using electronic medical records. She or he will evaluate the relationship between medical conditions and their causes and medical interventions and their outcomes through data analysis. The selected candidate will collaborate within a research team completing all aspects of a project through study design, regulatory approvals, project management, statistical analysis, as well as interpretation and dissemination of results. The research team combines the best of traditional epidemiologic methods along with advanced analytics and informatics methods in creative, cross-disciplinary activities. We subscribe to the philosophy of open data science and look to build upon the work of others and make our work as transparent and community-driven as possible. This includes the use of standards, open source software, and community-driven common data models.

Responsibilities:

  • Uses data science to synthesize unstructured, disjointed information in to meaningful, compelling narratives that facilitate development and refinement of the health system strategy.
  • Demonstrated abilities with electronic medical record data analysis.

  • Submission of abstracts and generation of analytic reports.
  • Utilizes critical thinking to manage studies by planning, assisting with study design, developing statements of work and analysis plans, monitoring progress, evaluating data quality, analyzing data, validating results, and seeking ways to improve workflow.
  • Provides technical and scientific assistance and expertise on epidemiology and collaborate with Federal, state, and local partners and non-government stakeholders.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team player, to work on multiple projects under pressure and with tight timelines and maintain the attention to detail quality.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s of Science degree with a focus on Bioinformatics, Biostatistics, Computer Science or Molecular Biology or equivalency (2 years related work experience may be substituted for 1 year of education). Two years of experience in genomic data analysis required. Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills also required.
  • Software development experience in object oriented programming using Java, Python, and or C++ and familiarity with molecular biology, genomics and some biostatistics helpful.
  • Master of Science degree or PhD in Bioinformatics, Computer Science and/or Life Sciences preferred.
  • Applicants must demonstrate the potential ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined in the position description.
