Job Description:
The UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center (UNMCCC) Analytical and Translational Genomics Shared Resources is seeking a HS Sr Research Specialist who will serve a key role as a Bioinformatics Data Scientist to facilitate the analysis of complex, large-scale genomics data using bioinformatics pipelines and both conventional and cloud-based computing.

The successful applicant will be a key member of a team of biologists, statisticians and computational experts working on the analysis of next-generation sequencing data, for both research and clinical-translational projects. Advanced computational and data handling skills, especially linux and/or unix command-line interfaces and scripting, expertise with data and computing security and experience with advanced computers, including cloud computing platforms, is important.

This position serves an important role as the link between basic scientists, translational researchers and biostatisticians, so the successful applicant must have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, a desire to work as part of a large, diverse team and a broad understanding of the use of computational tools to solve focused scientific problems. This person must serve a key role as the primary interface between the large and complicated data sets generated by genomic methods including next-generation sequencing and the users, which include clinicians, basic scientists, translational researchers, students, staff and faculty. The person must also be able to explain computing technologies and approaches to visiting students and lay people.

Minimum Qualifications:

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Master's degree with at least 3 years of directly related experience.

OR

Bachelor's degree with at least 5 years of directly related experience

OR

High school diploma or GED; at least 9 years experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Preferred Qualifications:

-Must have an understanding of molecular biology, cancer biology and genetics.

-Must have experience with R and Bioconductor in the analysis of next-gen sequencing data.

-Must have advanced computing experience, including parallel and/or cloud computing.

-Should be able to bridge the disciplines of biology, computation and statistics.

-Outstanding communication skills are essential.

-Must be able to work independently, as part of a larger bioinformatics team, without continuous supervision.

-Must be able to interact successfully and productively with a broad range of individuals with diverse backgrounds, including clinicians, researchers, students, staff and faculty.
