Job Description:
The Bioinformatics Scientist will contribute to and maintain high throughput data analysis systems to support the Genomics Resources Core (GRC) within the Institute of Bioinformatics and Evolutionary Studies (IBEST). This position will work within the GRC team and collaborate with Principal Investigators, using robust tools, pipelines, and analysis techniques to process and analyze biological data generated from next-generation sequencing and other high throughput techniques. The position is highly collaborative in nature; therefore, strong communication skills and willingness to work collaboratively in a team are essential.

Responsibilities
Job Duty Function Provide reliable, effective, and efficient bioinformatic support to IBEST Genomics Resources Core customers by: Job Duties/Responsibilities:- Providing for all aspects of design, analysis, programming, testing, and implementation of new and existing bioinformatic applications as are contracted by the Core to be performed.
- Independently troubleshooting and fixing of bioinformatic related problems.
- Effectively communicating data analysis techniques and results to staff, students, and faculty who use IBEST Genomics Resources Core Services.
- Preparing and maintaining programmatic and data analysis documentation.
- Consulting with Principal Investigators on aspects of experimental design, data acquisition, analysis and related aspects of research plan development.
- Providing technical advice to Principal Investigators in the development of research proposals to federal, state and private agencies and foundations.
- Serving as a liaison between Principal Investigators and the IBEST Computational Resources Core to communicate computational needs and problems.
- Collaborating with the Genomics Resources Core Director to resolve complex bioinformatic problems and implement appropriate solutions.
- Collaborating with the Core laboratory Genomics Scientist and other laboratory staff to convey and assist in resolving problems associated with data generation.
- Serving as liaison between the IBEST Genomics Resources Core and the other IBEST Cores to communicate Core needs and problems.
- Contributing to a collaborative and congenial team environment with the Genomics Resources Core and within IBEST.
- Completing assigned tasks in a timely manner.
- Attending IBEST lunch, IBEST seminars, IBEST retreat, Core meeting and all other required meetings.
- Maintaining current knowledge of computational biology, bioinformatics, and methods of data analysis.
- Reviewing scientific literature.
- Actively participating in relevant professional societies and organizations.
- Disseminating results by publication in peer-reviewed journals.
- Developing scientific collaborations and relationships.
Minimum Qualifications
Position Qualifications:- Masters degree in Bioinformatics or three years’ experience and advanced degree in Computer Science, Statistics, Biology, or related discipline.
- Experience with computer languages commonly used in scientific programming (ex. C/C++, python, R, or similar languages).
- Experience working in a UNIX/LINUX, command line environment specifically for bioinformatics data analyst
- Demonstrated ability in analyzing high throughput sequencing data.
- Must have a flexible and professional attitude towards working hours especially with regards to deadlines.
- Ph.D. in computational biology, bioinformatics, systems biology, biostatistics or related discipline.
- Three or more years of hands-on research experience with the analysis of high-throughput biological data analysis.
- Possesses a sound knowledge of statistics and quantitative modeling, as well as solid computer programming skills.
- Excellent ability to communicate verbally and in writing.
- Ability to take direction and work efficiently and effectively within a team environment.
- Ability to attend to detail and organize workload to complete complex tasks in a timely manner.
- Working well with people from various organizational disciplines and with people who have varying degrees of technical experience.
