Job Description:
The University of Pittsburgh Center for Medicine and the Microbiome (CMM) is seeking a Bioinformatics Engineer.

The Bioinformatics Engineer will work as a computational biologist and big data specialist, focusing on mathematical and computational analyses and management of multi-omics data sets, relevant to the study of the microbiome. This position incorporates a wide range of skills and activities emphasizing bioinformatics and computer software engineering. Knowledge of biostatistics and computational modeling such as machine learning or metabolic modeling is also an asset.

The Bioinformatics Engineer will be responsible for implementing computational and statistical methods to improve analysis capabilities and output for multiple projects to study microbial communities and host-microbiome interactions. The position will also require participation in submissions for extramurally-funded research and peer-reviewed publications derived from project results with CMM collaborators. This role will also entail assisting in the development of next generation sequence (NGS) analysis software and pipelines. The candidate will be expected to follow best coding practices: issue tracking, source code control, unit testing, and documentation management. An ability to apply Perl, R, and shell scripting in Linux environment is required. Knowledge of grid/cloud computing and database management is an asset.

Additional Education and/or Experience Essential to the Position:

Master’s degree or PhD preferred, however a Bachelor’s degree with additional experience will be considered. Degree in computational biology, bioinformatics, or biostatistics or equivalent expert knowledge is preferred. Facility with R, Perl, shell scripting in a Linux environment, and Microsoft Office applications, and basic knowledge in biology, microbiology, genomics and experience with basic statistical analysis programs is preferred.
