Progenity invites applications for an exciting Bioinformatics Engineer position at our R&D facilities located in Ann Arbor, MI, near the University of Michigan. Our focus here is the development of new and innovative molecular diagnostics products that provide reliable information for life impacting decisions in the fields of oncology and women’s health. The Bioinformatics Engineer will collaborate across multi-functional teams to develop software and systems that support the characterization of genetic signatures in clinical sequencing data that are diagnostic of human disease. The Bioinformatics Engineer will collaborate across multi-functional teams to develop software and systems that support the characterization of genetic signatures in clinical sequencing data that are diagnostic of human disease. Responsibilities:
- Participates in R&D and IT research projects to develop new molecular diagnostic products.
- Leads and coordinates efforts to join software and system components into automated analysis pipelines.
- Researches, designs and develops software components that facilitate high-throughput data analysis.
- Acts as technical lead within unit of work, solving practical problems in software architecture.
- Researches and designs analytical models that classify diagnostic features in sequencing data.
- Performs data analysis in support of R&D activities.
- Shares knowledge and coach junior team members.
- Independently plans and estimates effort required for development activities.
- Manages time and workloads to maximize efficiency.
- Communicates effectively with collaborators to support projects and mitigate risks.
- Documents development activities and quality control measures.
- Previous titles: Bioinformatician, data scientist, computer scientist, software engineer/developer, algorithms developer, quantitative analyst, systems architect/administrator.
- Advanced degree holder: Ph.D. in a quantitative field (Bioinformatics, Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, etc) or core science field (Chemistry, Biology, Physics). M.S. or B.S. degrees along with extensive experience may be considered.
- Effective communication skills in verbal, written, and visual mediums.
- Advanced proficiency with software development in Python and a compiled language (C, C++, C#), employing coding best practices and version control. Linux systems administration experience is a plus.
- A demonstrated ability to work with large data sets.
- Experience developing for and leveraging cloud compute services. Experience developing or leveraging web APIs is a plus.
- Knowledge of machine learning or advanced computational algorithms is a plus.
