Job Description:
Zymergen is hiring software engineering interns for Summer 2018 to help us build our data science tools and cloud infrastructure for DNA sequence analysis, data storage and visualization. Interns will join a diverse team of engineers and scientists that use next-generation sequencing (NGS) and machine learning to discover the metabolic potential of organisms and engineer new strains.

Specific projects vary by internship. Some projects may include:

  • Implementing machine learning approaches to automate steps in the sequence analysis pipeline to remove costly manual review steps.
  • Using Docker and container-based approaches to run cutting-edge genome assembly pipelines at scale on a variety of microbes and validate/visualize the results.
  • Improving our job execution and workflow engine infrastructure and related web and data services to track sequence analyses run on AWS.
  • Prototyping a tiered, scalable data storage solution for sequence data that balances both performance and cost.
  • Extending our AngularJS web interface with better interactive tools for visualizing results of complex sequence analysis workflows.
Qualifications/Experience:

We favor candidates with the following credentials:

  • Currently pursuing a B.S. or M.S. program in Computer Science or have training through App Academy or a similar program.
  • Excellent skills in Python, Java, Javascript or other similar languages.
  • Working knowledge of Linux
  • Previous experience or study in a life sciences company or setting is not essential. M.S. students without a B.S. in Computer Science or related technical field should have some life sciences background.
