Job Description:
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

-Effectively function as a client facing instructor for ABiL’s workforce development training program to clearly, concisely and effectively communicate bioinformatics concepts with a primary focus on skill transfer.

-Describe the underlying theory and application, and demonstrate the use of a wide range of bioinformatics tools and methods, and the application of relevant software packages and analysis methods to address client research goals. Subject areas include, but are not limited to: genome assembly and annotation, metagenomics, cancer genomics, comparative genomics, genome wide association studies, transcriptomics, proteomics, epigenomics, functional genomics, molecular evolution and phylogenetics, molecular epidemiology, genome-based molecular typing and development of novel typing schemes, genotype-to-phenotype analysis, biostatistical analysis, machine learning and high-dimensional clustering analysis, high performance (HPC) and cloud computing, database and web-services development and next-generation sequence (NGS) data management and analysis.

-Design training datasets for each workforce development training session and configure the training systems before each session.

-When required, function as a client facing instructor to train client staff in the implementation of custom bioinformatics solutions provided by ABiL, quickly and effectively bringing trainees to operational status.

-Remain informed of the latest developments in the literature and offer innovative and novel solutions to the ABiL team.

-Participate in weekly team meetings to stay abreast of the new research and development activities performed by ABiL team.

-Effectively document all work practices and solutions so that a record exists.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

-Minimum: Master’s degree (Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Biomedical, Computer Science, Mathematics, or Biology).

-Must have successfully completed a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor’s degree or higher with at least 24 semester hours in mathematics, statistics, bioinformatics, or informatics.

-2-3 years demonstrated experience working in the capacity of a bioinformatician where demonstrated solutions to research questions being addressed exist in peer-reviewed publications.

-Proficiency in the use of various open source and/or commercially available next generation sequence analysis tools.

-Proficiency in the analysis, assembly and annotation of genomic data from a variety of sequencing platforms such as Illumina, 454, IonTorrent, PacBio, and Oxford Nanopore.

-Strong interpersonal skills, required for working in a fast paced multidisciplinary team environment and for extensive interaction with clients and external partners.

-Strong written and oral presentation skills and the ability to effectively convey information required for skill transfer.

Required:

-Demonstrated experience with Unix (BASH scripting).

-Demonstrated experience with the use of a diverse range of bioinformatics software tools.

-Demonstrated experience with coding in PERL and/or PYTHON.

-Expertise in the underlying theory and the application of bioinformatics tools.

-Ability to configure and maintain a Unix/Linux bioinformatics computing environment.

-Demonstrated experience with next generation sequencing (NGS) analysis.

-Independent thought and experience, and exceptional communication skills are essential to successfully carry out the multiple tasks and responsibilities that pertain to these requirements.

-Experience with Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint and Microsoft Word.

Desirable:

-Degree in scientific discipline such as biology, biochemistry, genetics, molecular biology, or microbiology.

-Expertise in the underlying theory and application of a wide range of bioinformatics tools to address a diverse set of experimental questions.

-Prior laboratory work involving the use of bioinformatics analysis to address a research question.

-Demonstrated application of innovation in the solution of bioinformatics analysis of complex questions involving a diverse range of experimental questions.

-Strong understanding molecular analytical methods, the conceptual framework of the underlying methods and processes in bioinformatics, and the ability to clearly and concisely communicate this information to trainees.

-Demonstrated Bioinformatics teaching experience, and ability to effectively provide skill transfer in the use of bioinformatics tools and solutions.

Language Skills:

-Exceptional oral and written communication skills.

-Must be comfortable giving lectures to training participants in a classroom environment

IHRC, Inc. provides scientific, information management and administrative program support to various Centers, Institutes and Offices of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) under several contracts. The successful candidate will be a full-time employee of ABiL, IHRC, Inc., and will be assigned to the Applied Bioinformatics Laboratory located on the campus of the Georgia Institute of Technology, 950 Atlantic Drive NW Atlanta, GA, 30332.

The Applied Bioinformatics Laboratory (ABiL), IHRC, Inc., provides our clients with workforce development training to quickly enable client staff to implement the novel solutions that we provide and to utilize existing bioinformatics tools and methods to address their research requirements.
