The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at Fontbonne University launched an exciting new major in bioinformatics in fall 2014. As a result of the new major, the Department will hire a new full-time, tenure-track faculty member to join its existing faculty members in applied mathematics, computer science, cyber security and management information systems. This faculty member will have the unique opportunity to serve as the first director of the new bioinformatics degree program at Fontbonne University. As such, we seek a motivated, organized, enthusiastic and excellent instructor who can skillfully serve in multiple roles, including lecturer, student mentor, and program director. The newly-hired faculty member is expected to design and teach upper division courses in bioinformatics as well as continue his/her research in the field. The successful candidate will be a dedicated and excellent teacher who can motivate undergraduate students to master the skills, concepts and methods of bioinformatics, as well as other topics in computer science and statistics. Requirements of the position:
- Hold a Ph.D. in bioinformatics, computer science, computer engineering, software engineering or a related field. Preference will be given to the candidate with strong bioinformatics credentials, solid experience in, and knowledge of, programming languages and operating systems and a history of excellence in teaching.
- Have experience with and/or an excellent understanding of molecular genetics, the tools of molecular biology and NextGen sequencing techniques.
- Teach general computer science courses, as well as those in bioinformatics, and statistics & probability.
- Direct student research projects that utilize bioinformatics tools.
- Assume department and university responsibilities such as advising students, participating in departmental activities and university governance.
