Job Description:

The German Cancer Research Center is the largest biomedical research institution in Germany. With more than 2,700 employees, we operate an extensive scientific program in the field of cancer research.
The Division of Pediatric Neurooncology is seeking a

Bioinformatics Group Leader (m/f)
(Ref-No. 169/2014)

Description:
This position, available immediately for an initial period of three years with a subsequent tenure track evaluation, will involve working in the Division of Pediatric Neurooncology (headed by Prof. Dr. Stefan Pfister; http://www.pediatric-neurooncology.com) as one of five group leaders (and a total of 25 members).

The candidate will be heading a group of 4-5 scientists and PhD students within the Division of Pediatric Neurooncology and will be centrally involved in cutting-edge genome and epigenome research as might be expected from the recent scientific output of this division. The team is very international and multidisciplinary, and the working atmosphere is lively and friendly. Working language is English. The bioinformatics group is responsible for the development and application of bioinformatics tools for the integrative analysis of next-generation sequencing data from tumorous and non-tumorous tissue including genome, transcriptome, methylome, and histone ChIP data, and their clinical correlation and application. Through various current large genome and epigenome sequencing projects, the division has existing unprecedented datasets to be further analyzed and used for the establishment of new tools.

Your profile:
This position will form a pivotal part of the ground-breaking pediatric brain cancer sequencing project within the International Cancer Genome Consortium, amongst others.

As such, applicants must be exceptionally talented and highly motivated to work independently and to a high standard, within a demanding but highly rewarding framework. The candidate should have experience in analysing short read DNA sequencing data ideally in the context of transcriptomes and epigenomes (i.e. DNA methylation, histone modifications, general DNA-protein interactions). Demonstrable skills in programming and biostatistics (e.g. Perl, Python, R, Matlab) as well as the Linux computing environment (e.g. BASH, HPC usage) are essential.

Candidates with a background in computer science, mathematics or statistics should be familiar with molecular biological methods. The successful candidate will be encouraged to develop own research ideas in the area of epigenome regulation, evolution of the epigenome and development of therapy resistance. Furthermore, the applicant should hold a PhD in bioinformatics or a related field.

The application should include a cover letter, a curriculum vitae, copies of relevant degree certificates, and contact details for at least two references.

The position is limited for 3 years with a subsequent tenure track evaluation. The position can in principle be part-time.
v For further information please contact Prof. Dr. Stefan Pfister, phone 06221 42-4618.

The German Cancer Research Center is committed to increase the percentage of female scientists and encourages female applicants to apply. Among candidates of equal aptitude and qualifications, a person with disabilities will be given preference.
