Job Description:
The Madhani laboratory (madhanilab.ucsf.edu and @hitenmadhani) at the Mission Bay Campus at UCSF is recruiting for a Junior/Assistant Specialist with experience in computation (Python/R) with knowledge/interest in bioinformatics. The laboratory is in Genentech Hall and specializes in studies of the regulation of gene expression in health and in disease. The laboratory is also affiliated with the Chan-Zuckerberg Biohub (czbiohub.org/investigators/) and there will be opportunities to interface with software engineers there. After being trained in the requisite software, individuals will use, support, and further develop existing bioinformatics pipelines to analyze high-throughput sequencing and proteomics data produced in the laboratory. The position is especially well-suited for recent graduates with computational/engineering backgrounds to receive training in computational biology and bioinformatics to better position themselves for opportunities in this area. A two-year commitment is required. Salary will be commensurate with the applicants experience and training.

The individual will work collaboratively with members of the laboratory to analyze large datasets aimed at understanding mechanisms of epigenetic regulation in cells. Data types include those produced by RNA-seq, ChIP-seq, bisulfite-seq, CLIP-seq and NET-seq. In addition, there will be opportunities to teach and mentor graduate students and postdoctoral fellows in the use of computational tools and to attend scientific seminars and meetings. Appointees in the Specialist series will be expected to engage in specialized research, professional activities and do not have teaching responsibilities. Specialists are expected to use their professional expertise to make scientific and scholarly contributions, and may participate in University and Public Service. Screening of applicants will begin immediately and will continue as needed throughout the recruitment period.

Basic Qualifications:

Must have a B.S. in computer science, engineering, physics, or molecular biology.

Additional Qualifications:

  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrable skills in computation including Linux, Python and R.
