Job Description:
The Merajver Lab is seeking a lead bioinformatician to play a senior role in supporting the lab’s research program. The lab is devoted to understanding the molecular genetics and associated functions of very aggressive breast and other cancers. The primary areas of focus are systems biology, mathematical oncology, biophysics, cell biology, genetics, and precision medicine drug development. The bioinformatician will be responsible for coordinating informatics efforts across the lab, supporting lab faculty, staff scientists, postdocs, and students in their research efforts and developing novel methodologies when necessary.

Responsibilities:

  • Meet with lab and collaborating researchers including faculty, staff scientists, postdocs, and students to understand their scientific questions of interest. Assist in developing and/or revising researchers’ experimental designs and analytical approaches as necessary.
  • Lead the development and execution of both standard and custom analyses, coordinating systematic exploration of complex, high-dimensional data to identify key, testable metrics. Identify and resolve data quality issues as necessary.
  • Develop bioinformatics pipelines to automate analysis of both internally generated and publically available datasets. Extend existing pipelines with new functionality, create/adopt new pipelines to address emerging technologies in the field, and integrate data across types and sources.
  • Document and present bioinformatics methods and analysis results. Co-author scientific presentations and publications based on analyses performed.
  • Participate in the development of grant proposals.
  • Continue professional development by reviewing literature and evaluating tools to identify and validate emerging methods.
  • Supervise bioinformatics postdocs and graduate students who are performing bioinformatic analysis
Required Qualifications:
  • Passionate about science and research
  • PhD in Bioinformatics, Biostatistics, Computer Science, or Mathematics
  • A minimum of 2 years experience in cancer research
  • A minimum of 10 years experience in bioinformatics development/analysis, preferably working with a broad range of researchers across a range of phenotypes and data types.
  • Advanced understanding of cancer as well as multiple scientific areas characteristic of bioinformatics (e.g. molecular/cell biology, genetics/genomics, proteomics, computer science, data modeling/statistics).
  • Strong software development skills in a unix environment (e.g. Python, Java, SQL, GIT).
  • Familiarity with Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) data analysis methods and their application to cancer research, including tumor WGS, WES, RNA-Seq, and targeted gene panel sequencing methodologies.
  • Knowledge of statistical analysis and machine learning techniques using modern computational tools (e.g. R, BioConductor, pandas, scikit-learn).
  • Experience with High Performance Computing (Torque, PBS, Slurm, etc.)
  • Familiarity with relevant public data sources and methods (Broad GATK, TCGA/ICGC, ClinVar, COSMIC, ExAC, etc.)
  • Familiarity with functional annotation, enrichment, and pathway analysis methods.
  • Candidate must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse groups of people at various of levels of expertise.

  • Experience in single-cell sequencing methodologies
  • Experience in drug development and biomarker detection
  • A strong publication record
  • Experience in the mathematical modeling of cancer and metastasis
  • Familiarity with Agile software practices
