Job Description:
In collaboration with scientists from Oregon Health & Science University and University of Washington, we are analyzing the longitudinal changes in gut microbiome and host transcriptome simultaneously in non-human primates by deep sequencing, and the association of these changes with host immune response and vaccine efficacy. This researcher will drive the integrative analysis of the generated deep sequencing data and associated method development. Opportunities exist to interact closely with a group of accomplished intramural and extramural collaborators.

Other Work/Responsibilities:

The Peng Lab uses systems approaches to better understand pathogen-host-microbiome interactions and microbial pathogenesis. The goal is to uncover underlying molecular mechanisms of microbial pathogenesis and to identify targets of intervention as well as biomarkers for clinical applications. We focus on computational analysis of high-throughput omics data combined with experimental validation. The Lab is housed in the College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) Research Building located at the NC State Biomedical Centennial Campus, and is part of NC State Bioinformatics Research Center.

We seek an exceptional postdoctoral fellow to conduct independent research in the emerging fields of microbiome-virus-host interaction such as non-coding RNA and immunity, gut microbiome and vaccine efficacy, the genetics and regulation of complex immune genes. This researcher will drive the integrative analysis of the collected deep sequencing data and the development of computational methods. Opportunities exist to interact closely with a group of accomplished intramural and extramural collaborators.

  • Drive computational analysis, integration, and biological interpretation of large scale microbiome and host transcriptome deep sequencing datasets
  • Develop computational strategies to derive features in microbiome and host transcriptome associated with phenotypic variables
  • Design follow-up experiments and analyses collaboratively
  • Publish research findings and present them at conferences as first-author
  • Assist with grant writing
Minimum Experience/Education :

Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate (e.g., M.D., D.V.M., Sc.D.) in appropriate field awarded no more than five (5) years from initial date of postdoctoral appointment.

Departmental Required Skills:

  • Ph.D. or equivalent (e.g., M.D., D.V.M., Sc.D.) in bioinformatics, computer science, statistics, genomics, microbiology, immunology, or related areas
  • Experience with statistical programming like R
  • Experience with computational analysis and biological interpretation of RNA-seq and microbiome data is a strong plus
  • Good understanding of general biology
  • Critical problem solving
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
