Job Description:
Candidates will receive NIH standard stipend for up to two years to train for independent research skills in translational bioinformatics, by integrating clinical, genomic, and functional genomic data from public/proprietary domains to build predictive models for precision medicine. Opportunity to work with world-class biomedical research collaborators in cancer, autoimmune diseases, metabolic disorders, neurodegenerative diseases, and rare genetic disorders at UAB School of Medicine, a top 20 US Medical School ranked by NIH funding. The candidate will be mentored by Dr. Chen, Professor of Genetics and Computer Science and Chief Bioinformatics Officer of the UAB Informatics Institute, who has more than 20 years of bioinformatics research experience in both Academia and the industry. List of activities will include conducting data-driven high-impact systems biology studies, development of novel bioinformatics tools to mine omics and clinical data sets, writing high-impact manuscripts, and writing NIH Career Training proposals, to build skills towards transitioning into future PIs. UAB and Birmingham provides excellent uprising environment for data sciences and biomedical informatics, with the new initiative established with the founding of its Informatics Institute in 2015.

PhD in Bioinformatics, Computer Science, Biomedical Engineering or other data science related disciplines. A PhD in biomedical sciences may be considered if significant experience in applied computer/data science, statistical genomics, machine learning, data mining, or other quantitative sciences or engineering is demonstrated. Candidates are expected to show evidence of scholarly publication in high-impact journals/proceedings and potential to grow into an independent researcher with two years of training in translational bioinformatics research. Skills expected are: excellent programming skills with MatLab, R, Python, Java, Php, SQL, data science skills from data wrangling to machine learning, scientific publication/presentation skills, and good teamwork/people skills.
