Job Description:
This position is currently being recruited under two separate postings, as a Bioinformatics Programmer 2 (job #17926262) and a Bioinformatics Programmer 3 (job #17926680), and will be filled accordingly based on qualifications. The Institute for Integrative Genome Biology at the University of California, Riverside invites applications for a Bioinformatics Programmer in the newly established Metabolomics Core Facility. Responsibilities will include performing complex statistical procedures on metabolomics datasets and developing tools and workflows for high throughput data processing, curation, and visualization. The successful candidate will work largely with metabolomics and proteomics datasets, with the future aim of integrating genomics data in a systems biology context, transforming the extensive datasets into knowledge.

Education Requirements:

DEGREE REQUIREMENT

Bachelor's degree in biological science, computational/programming, or related area and/or equivalent experience/training.Required

M.S. or Ph.D. in statistics, computer science, bioinformatics, or related discipline. Preferred

Experience

Required:

  • Minimum of 5 years of related experience.
  • Expertise in the software language R.
  • Experience working with high-resolution LC-MS or GC-MS metabolomics datasets.
  • Strong, broad background in multivariate statistical procedures for omics datasets, ideally within a biological context.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Post-graduate experience in a bioinformatics setting.
Preferred:
  • Proficiency in multiple programming languages and platforms in addition to R, such as C++ and HTML.
  • Prior experience with flux balance analysis and network modeling.
  • Experience creating web-based bioinformatics tools.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS: Must pass a background check. Required

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Thorough knowledge of bioinformatics methods, applications programming, web development and data structures.
  • Thorough knowledge of modern biology and applicable field of research.
  • Ability to interface with management on a regular basis.
  • Thorough knowledge of bioinformatics programming design, modification and implementation.
  • Understanding of relational databases, web interfaces, and operating systems.
  • Thorough knowledge of web, application and data security concepts and methods.
  • Ability to communicate technical information in a clear and concise manner.
  • Communication skills to work with both technical and non-technical personnel in multiple fields of expertise and at various levels in the organization.
  • Strong project management skills.
  • Self motivated, work independently or as part of a team, able to learn quickly, meet deadlines and demonstrate problem solving skills.
