Job Description:
HJF is seeking a Bioinformatics Programmer Analyst for the Bioinformatics Core for the Collaborative Health Research Initiative Program (CHIRP) at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS) in Bethesda, Maryland. HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to CHIRP.

CHIRP is a collaborative precision medicine research program between the National Institutes of Health and the Department of Defense with a focus on heart, lung, blood and sleep disorders. The programmer/analyst will develop, manage and execute genome analysis pipelines, and perform novel, discovery-based genome analysis in support of large-scale whole genome sequencing studies utilizing the Illumina HiSeq X Ten platform.

Responsibilities:

  1. Writes pipeline software for executing genomic analysis and managing results.
  2. Analyzes performance characteristics of analysis results and data production.
  3. Contributes to novel genome analytics and software
  4. Develops inventory databases and website development
  5. Writes utility software for managing data archives.
  6. Provides collaborative assistance to USU personnel that require the incumbent's expertise.
  7. Installs software as needed.
  8. Completes other projects as needed.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Programming competency in a scripting language (Perl, Python, or comparable), and (C/C++, Java or comparable language); experience with next-generation sequencing analysis (i.e. alignment, quality assessment, variant detection, statistical inference); experience with pipeline development and implementation on compute clusters and database‐driven website development preferred; demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a team in a deadline-driven environment; good communication and analytical skills.

Minimum Education/Training Requirements: Bachelor’s degree in computer science, bioinformatics or related discipline. Master’s or Ph.D. preferred.

Minimum Experience: 4-6 years programming experience.

Physical Capabilities: Extended periods of sitting and working at a computer.

Work Environment: Office or laboratory environment
