Job Description:
A biologist with bioinformatics / computer programming experience or a computer scientist with bioinformatics / biology experience to join a large team working on highly visible web resources for malaria and related diseases (EuPathDB.org). The Application Developer will interface with scientists to acquire data (e.g. genomic, functional genomic, systems biology and clinical studies) and build tools to load these data into a relational database, integrating these data with existing omics data. The successful applicant will work collaboratively on a team of >30 biologists and software developers to translate requirements generated by clinical and scientific user communities into effective data representations and interfaces, enabling powerful data-mining capabilities. Participation in the preparation of scientific papers and technical documentation and attendance at scientific meetings is encouraged. Duties at the Jr level would be similar but the successful Jr applicant would be expected to work under the oversight of a project leader rather than working independently (and acting as project lead). Note that this position will join a long-standing program with multiple performance sites. The successful hire could be based at either the University of Georgia or the University of Pennsylvania. Qualifications: JUNIOR LEVEL: BS in computer science, bioinformatics, biostatistics, biology or related field and 2-3 yr relevant work experience required. An active interest in and experience with bioinformatics and genomics applications is required, and experience in biostatistics is a strong plus. Experience with and working knowledge of UNIX, Perl, R, SQL and relational databases and XML are all highly desirable. An active interest in web programming is desirable, and experience a strong plus. SENIOR LEVEL: Bachelor’s degree in computer science, bioinformatics, biostatistics, biology or related field and 4-6 yr relevant work experience required or equivalent combination of education and experience. Master’s or PhD highly preferred An active interest in and experience with bioinformatics and genomics applications is required, and experience in biostatistics is a strong plus. Experience with and working knowledge of UNIX, Perl, R, SQL and relational databases and XML are all highly desirable.
