Job Description:
NewLeaf Symbiotics is seeking a highly motivated and talented Bioinformatics Scientist. NewLeaf is a provider of early stage discovery for agriculture. At NewLeaf we explore plant-microbe symbioses to identify products that improve yield.

The successful candidate will be responsible for analyzing microbial genomes and transcriptomes using high throughput sequencing datasets and associating genome-scale datasets with other information including plant and microbial phenotypes for marker discovery. Analyses entails assessing the quality of the data, processing data through appropriate analytical pipelines, determining the quality of the analyses and whether further analyses should be done, and assembling results. The individual will work closely with company biologists on experimental design related to data generation; data analysis and interpretation; will develop new analysis pipelines; and will communicate project updates and results to researchers.

This position requires a PhD degree or an equivalent combination of education and / or experience plus a minimum of three years of experience in bioinformatics, computational biology or computer science with specific experience in analysis of data from the Illumina and other next-generation sequencing platforms. Must be proficient in at least one scripting language (e.g. Perl/Python/Ruby) and have experience with at least one statistical language (e.g. R/S/SPSS/MATLAB). Good communication and organizational skills while working collaboratively but with minimal supervision is required. Prior experience in web and database development is preferred. Experience with cloud-based services such as Amazon’s EC2 platform is preferred. Preference will be given to applicants with a microbial sciences background in addition to expertise in bioinformatics.

Main Responsibilities:

  • The successful candidate will develop, implement, and execute bioinformatics pipelines using next-generation sequencing data.
  • Conduct analyses and interpretation of genome, transcriptome, other genomic datasets.
  • Present results through clear and concise representation of ideas and concepts to other team members and company management.
  • Manage multiple independent projects under aggressive timelines.
  • Work independently with minimal supervision, but also collaborate with other team members to tackle complex microbiological problems.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, or related discipline.
  • Microbial sciences background including knowledge about microbiology, microbial genomes, metabolism, and gene regulatory networks.
  • Strong programming, scripting, and database skills (Perl, Python, Ruby, Java, C++, XML, SQL, and proficiency in Linux/Unix operating systems).
  • Knowledge in statistics and machine learning.
  • Independent problem solving skills.
  • Have good communication skills, strong teamwork mindset with self-learning abilities.
  • 3+ years of experience in bioinformatics data analysis tools and databases.
  • Experience in analysis of genome, transcriptome, other genomic datasets and capability to use that information to drive project strategy.
