Job Description:
We are seeking a Scientist I to join the Computational Biology group located in San Diego, California.

Position Information:

You will report directly to the Bioinformatics team leader at San Diego. Working locally and globally with other researchers, computational biologists and bioinformaticians, you will provide Bioinformatic and data analysis support. The work will involve gene and enzyme curation and annotation, creating and optimizing bioinformatic pipelines, analyzing all generations of sequencing data, and providing direct bioinformatic support to projects. You will be involved on one or more currently ongoing projects that may include enzyme expression and functional analysis, bioinformatic support for vector and strain construction, and general protein bioinformatic analysis leveraging information and knowledge creation from diverse public and private datasets and computational tools. In addition, you will gain experience working as part of a multifunctional project team within a global sub-function and exposure to how business strategy drives R&D work within a corporation. In addition, you will gain experience working as part of multifunctional project teams and contribute towards development of novel R&D strategies.

Formula for Success: You Will...

  • Curate and manage large datasets, gather end user requirements
  • Develop, optimize and apply pipelines and algorithms for processing and analyzing biological data
  • Conduct independent data analysis and interpretation, and generate reports as per specifications
  • Evaluate tools and coordinate efforts between the project teams and IT groups to define, validate and implement software for data management and analysis

Ingredients for Success: What We Look For in You:

  • MS in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Molecular Biology or a related field with Bioinformatics analysis experience or BS in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Molecular Biology or a related field with 2+ years of Bioinformatics analysis experience.
  • Experience in one or more areas of bioinformatics/computational biology including protein and DNA sequence analysis and use of various bioinformatics and data analysis applications in Unix and other operating systems
  • Computing skills with Perl or Python and/or other scripting/programming languages
  • SQL and knowledge of database design
Demonstrated Ability In:
  • defining requirements and interpreting results for scientists
  • working as part of a team and communicating effectively
  • innovative thinking and implementation
  • Wed also like to see Understanding of statistical analysis methods
Additional Experience In Other Areas Of Bioinformatics:
  • genome sequence analysis
  • Biodiversity analysis such as phylogenetics and comparative phylogenomics metagenomics pathway and functional analysis (gene/protein sequence-based function annotations and gene ontologies)
  • analysis of protein expression
  • meaningful integration and assembly of different types of biological, biophysical and informatics data
