Job Description:
The Bioinformatics Scientist will work within a growing team to provide bioinformatics support for R&D and production activities across the company. Key activities for this position include: perform exploratory and routine bioinformatics analyses, report and discuss findings with colleagues across disciplines, help maintain and expand in-house bioinformatics infrastructure and analysis pipelines, evaluate and work with third-party service providers, and identify new opportunities where bioinformatics can bring value. Topics of particular interest are: explaining phenotypic differences between strains through comparative genomics and transcriptomics; assembling and annotating de novo genome assemblies; genomics-based species and strain identification; determining species and strain abundances with metagenomics techniques; making genome data accessible to fellow researchers.

Responsibilities and Duties:
Tasks associated with this position include:- Deliver high quality, timely, and well-documented bioinformatics analyses to help solve complex problems as part of multi-disciplinarily teams including molecular biologists, bioprocess scientists, process engineers, application specialists, etc.;
- Develop and validate new bioinformatics workflows in response to the needs of the R&D organization;
- Automate routine bioinformatics analysis and reporting workflows;
- Train and assist colleagues in accessing and interpreting bioinformatics data and analysis results;
- Improve company-wide access and use of omics data;
- Contribute to patent applications and/or peer-reviewed journal articles relevant to our products;
- Evaluate third-party omics services and facilitate outsourcing.
Qualifications and Skills
Essential:- M.S. or Ph.D. in bioinformatics or related scientific field;
- Experience in creating new bioinformatics workflows and analyzing data in one or more common bioinformatics environments (shell scripting, Python, R, etc.);
- Ability to generate high quality, well-documented, and reproducible results in a timely manner while being able to prioritize new requests;
- Good troubleshooting and multi-tasking skills to solve technical problems and deal with parallel projects;
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced industrial R&D setting;
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Skilled in statistical analysis;
- Experience in analyzing microbial genomics, transcriptomics, and/or metagenomics data;
- Experience with cloud computing (e.g., Amazon AWS), containerization (e.g. Docker), version control (e.g. Git), and/or (open source) software development;
- Experience with genomics software suites such as Geneious, CLC Genomics Workbench, etc.;
- Experience in metabolic pathway engineering;
- Varied educational or industry experiences, enabling the development of new approaches to difficult problems;
- Authored scientific publications demonstrating expertise in comparative genomics, genome assembly, genome annotation, metagenomics data analysis, transcriptomics, and/or metabolic engineering.
