Job Description:
This role presents a rare opportunity to join a cross-functional team focusing on the next wave of product innovation for population-scale screening in the rapidly growing applied genomics markets, such as DTC and healthy human screening. The candidate will lead the development of new microarray and/or next generation sequencing (NGS) informatics applications, variant content for new products, and support tools serving the needs of these markets.

In this role, the candidate will have an opportunity to design and develop tools, analytical pipelines, and data management software in a production environment and an opportunity to make tangible contributions to the ongoing development and implementation of quality checks/quality assurance and validation strategies. This will include work in a highly matrixed setting, both within Illumina and with external collaborators. We expect the candidate to have proficient interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills in addition to having a quality-driven and results-oriented mindset.

Roles & Responsibilities:

  • Technical design and performance evaluation of novel content identified by the Emerging Markets Bioinformatics Scientist.
  • Development and management of necessary bioinformatics tools and infrastructure for seamless applications of high-density genotyping data for the on-market microarrays products, including vcftools, plink, and imputation tools (BEAGLE/MACH/IMPUTE 2).
  • Fostering relationships with internal bioinformatics teams within Illumina to continuously improve existing and develop new array informatics tools in support of the evolving market needs.
  • Bioinformatic data generation for new product releases.

Requirements:
  • Experience with genetic analysis (genomic sequencing, genotyping, epigenetics, and/or expression).
  • Experience working with one or more of the following programming languages, with proficiency in at least one of them: R, Python, Perl, Matlab, Java, C, C++.
  • Proficiency in Unix and LSF job queuing.
  • Self-starter, detail-oriented and organized; able to deliver results within fixed deadlines.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to learn quickly on the job.
  • Ability to contribute independently and collaboratively, and to excel in a fast-paced environment.
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience with DNA methylation is desired, but not required.
  • Experience creating user-friendly GUIs for bioinformatics tools is preferred, but not required.
  • Exposure to cutting-edge technologies and work experience in a biotechnology company are preferred, but not required.
  • Location at the San Diego HQ is preferred, but not required.
Education:
  • Ph.D. in Bioinformatics, Human Genetics, Computer Science, Mathematics, or related field.
  • Post-doctoral experience is preferred, but not required.
