NeoGenomics is looking for a Bioinformatics Research Scientist within our Molecular Laboratory who will report directly to the technical director of the Molecular Laboratory. This position is primarily a genomics analyst based position and will assist R&D in developing advanced NGS pipelines for targeted cancer therapy to prepare CAP, CLIA, NCI-Match, NYS, FDA applications/submissions. The person will also be responsible for developing bioinformatic pipelines and custom analysis for validation/troubleshooting of assays required for preliminary for prospective clinical trials as well as maintaining local shared NGS cluster resources.

As a Bioinformatics Research Scientist you will support the dynamic goals of the fast paced genomics environment in industry. Responsibilities will include, but not be limited to the following:

  • Lead the Development, analytical testing and validation of new bioinformatic pipelines to improve Neogenomics clinical diagnostic NGS platform with an emphasis on rigorously validation and robust procedures. Working closely with an interdisciplinary team of clinical laboratory scientists, pathologists, R&D scientists, marketing, and sales teams to bring new methods to the operational level.
  • Assist with drafting and completing government applications (NIH, FDA, NYS, CLIA, CAP) and manuscripts for publication; lead data analysis and interpretation of study results throughout application/publication process from draft through submission and acceptance.
  • Enhance existing bioinformatics methods, improving their assay capabilities as well as their technical robustness.
  • Monitor and evaluate analytical aspects of new and emerging technologies.
  • Process, analyze, and interpret high volumes of data for the development and validation of methods.
  • Present scientific and technical data to colleagues in a clear and cohesive manner.
  • Work independently and prepare timetables, deliverables, and project schedules.

Experience & Required Qualifications:

Education: Masters 2-4 years or Ph.D. Molecular Biology, Bioinformatics, Genomic Sciences, Genetics, Cancer Biology or 1-2 yrs w/direct NGS experience

Required Experience:

  • In this role, you should have working knowledge of molecular biology with strong scientific understanding of genomics and show a strong capacity for independent thinking.
  • Required knowledge of common genomic terminology (exome, targeted RNA/DNA panels, gene structure), databases (UCSC/EBI/NIH), genome versions, and tools used in genomics (e.g. dbSNP, COSMIC, ClinVar, UCSC genome browser, Galaxy, IGV)
  • Required working analysis experience of large genomic datasets (RNAseq profiling, somatic variant analysis, CNV analysis, bioinformatics QC of libraries, TCGA), and use of common bioinformatics tools (TopHat, BWA, GATK, SAMtools, pysam, Picard Tools, Bowtie, edgeR, DESeq, BWA etc…).
  • Required Linux/Unix terminal/command line-only expertise; GUI/MS-based experience will not be considered. You should have first-hand experience maintaining common use parallel computing environments/clusters, like SGE/Torque clusters.
  • Required knowledge of R command line; and R figures and plots.
  • Required expert efficiency in BASH and scripting languages (e.g. Python) languages
  • A high level of professional maturity, including an ability to consistently meet tight deadlines under pressure and command attention and respect in a client-facing setting.
  • Capability of highly-independent work as well as being a team player and role model.
  • High energy level, a driving sense of urgency and a seasoned “make it happen/can do” orientation
Preferred:
  • Experience in cancer or genetics research, including a working understanding of computational approaches for cancer/genetic genome analysis, is helpful.
  • Knowledge of Bioinformatic approaches to RNA normalization, Variant annotation, CNV tools, UMI tools, translocation and fusions identification, and MSI.
  • Established scientific/technical writing and presentation skills; publication/manuscript/CAP/CLIA/NYS validation, NIH grant experience greatly preferred.
  • Fluency in English
