Job Description:
Understanding the role of the microbiome in human health and disease is an important component of HLI’s mission. The focus of this role includes software and system development in microbiome data processing and data analysis, and research in microbiome and disease association and knowledge discovery.

Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement methods for microbiome annotation and profiling at an industrial scale
  • Develop and apply novel statistical, bioinformatics, and data mining algorithms and applications
  • Carry out association analyses with sophisticated genotypic, microbiomic, metabolomic, proteomic and phenotypic information
  • Support microbiome product development and technical operations
  • Conduct microbiome research and development with HLI’s business partners and collaborators
Minimum Qualifications (Must have) :
  • Ph.D in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Statistics, Computer Science or closely related fields with a focus on applications of next generation sequencing (NGS)
  • Strong programming skills and the ability to design and prototype computational algorithms in C++, Python or Perl, R and other computer languages
  • Solid skills in relational databases such as MySQL and PostgreSQL, capable of architecting complicated schema
  • Prior experience working with large-scale genetics and genomics datasets (Big Data)
  • Must have excellent familiarity with computational, statistical or mathematical methods
  • Experiences in a Linux environment and high performance computing environment
  • Experiences in collaborative software development
  • Established track record applying innovative methods to drive project success
  • Demonstrate outstanding personal initiative and the ability to work effectively as part of a team
  • Collaborate with diverse scientists from computational and experimental backgrounds
  • Demonstrates excellent verbal and written and communication skills
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in analyzing metagenomics, microbial genomics, and metabolomics data
  • Experience working in cloud environment, Amazon Web Services (AWS) preferred
  • 2+ years’ experience in a startup organization
  • 2+ years post-graduate experience
  • Publications demonstrating expertise in one or more of the following: genome assembly, genome annotation, metagenomics data analysis, microbiome and disease association study
