Job Description:
An opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated programmer/scientist to join the Jalview (www.jalview.org) development team. Jalview is free visualisation and data integration software that was first developed in 1996 and is used by tens of thousands of researchers and students for the analysis of biological sequence and structural data (proteins, DNA and RNA).

If you want to join the Jalview project, then you need to demonstrate:

  • Strong Java application development experience. We will also consider applicants with demonstrable experience in other object orientated languages (such as C++, C#, or JavaScript) who wish to develop their Java skills on a challenging project.
  • Familiarity in developing complex GUI applications that take advantage of web services, large scale databases and distributed computation.
  • Ability to apply good software engineering practice (version control, documentation, code review, build systems, tests, debuggers).
  • Good written, visual, oral, and online communication skills.
Ideal candidates should also have:
  • Experience of working with a large legacy codebase.
  • Enthusiasm for learning about the science and data types that Jalview supports.
  • A degree, masters, or Ph.D. and/or equivalent experience in a scientific or numerate discipline.
  • A keen interest in the creation of powerful open source interactive visualisation and analysis tools for biological data science.

Jalview development is managed in Prof. Geoff Barton’s bioinformatics research group at the University of Dundee (www.compbio.dundee.ac.uk). The team occupies purpose-built space for computational research in the Discovery Centre, the latest development to the School of Life Sciences research complex. We support flexible working arrangements and the University has a generous holiday entitlement.

This position is available for two years in the first instance.
