Job Description:
Genentech seeks a talented and highly motivated bioinformatic scientist to pursue research projects in collaboration with our Cancer Immunology Department, and to contribute to the identification and development of the next generation of immune based cancer therapies. Depending on prior experience, this individual may also lead one or more other scientists engaged in similar research activities.

The primary focus will be on generation and interpretation of high-throughput genomic and other molecular data that increase our understanding of, for example,

  • The degree and nature of immune infiltration in the tumor microenvironment;
  • Mechanisms by which tumors avoid immune surveillance or inhibit effector activity;
  • The impact of mutation or gene expression dysregulation on tumor neo-antigen presentation; and
  • Local or circulating biomarkers which predict response to immunomodulatory drugs or therapies.
Emphasis is on basic research, but with a direct connection to the clinic and to Genentech’s drug and biomarker development initiatives. In particular, our extensive high-dimensional molecular characterization of samples from immunotherapy clinical trials provide an outstanding opportunity for partnering pre-clinical and clinical findings.

The successful candidate will work with interdisciplinary teams, carry out data analysis and integration across various domains, and apply best-in-class algorithms — or develop new algorithms — that directly address the motivating biological and clinical questions. Regular publication of both scientific and methodological results is strongly encouraged. Finally, the successful candidate will be able to effectively present complex results in a clear and concise manner that is accessible to a diverse audience of quantitative, experimental, and clinical scientists.

Who You Are:

We are seeking applicants for this position with the following qualifications:

  • PhD in bioinformatics, biostatistics, computational biology or similar, with a strong publication record. Alternately, a PhD in molecular biology, immunology, etc. combined with a very strong record of high-throughput data analysis, supported by publication in this area.
  • A solid understanding of the relevant concepts in cancer biology and genetics, or in immunology. Enthusiasm for learning more.
  • Broad experience with data generated by one or more high-throughput molecular assays: microarrays, next-generation sequencing, multiplexed qPCR, flow cytometry, mass spectrometry proteomics, etc. Experience with single-cell assays (e.g., CyTOF or single-cell RNA-seq) is a significant plus.
  • Strong experience in the use of a high-level programming language such as R, MATLAB, Python or Perl for complex data analysis.
  • Exceptionally strong communication, data presentation and visualization skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively, and to handle several concurrent, fast-paced projects.
