Job Description:
We have an an opening for a Bioinformatics Software Engineer to develop bioinformatics tools for analysis and characterization of microbial pathogen genomes. Specific biosecurity opportunities exist to develop and deploy sequence analysis pipelines for comprehensive biological relevance reporting.

In this role, you will maintain and mine databases of genomes and functional featuresYou will provide customer technical support and training in applying bioinformatics tools, as well as designing and building reporting interfaces. This position is within the Global Security Computing Applications Division (GS-CAD) of the Computation Directorate. This position will be filled at either the SES.1 or SES.2 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.

Essential Duties - Design and implement analysis techniques targeting a large number of microbial gene and genome sequences. - Develop, maintain, and utilize local and external databases of genomic and gene/protein sequences that will be utilized by the software development team. - Integrate software development updates with deployed systems. - Develop and interact with end users to extend the software for new applications.

Engage other software developers frequently to share relevant knowledge, opinions, and recommendations, working to fulfill deliverables as a team. - Perform other duties as assigned. In Addition at the SES.2 level - Interact closely with the software development team to ensure performance of tools satisfies scalability needs. - Participate in the establishment of future application directions.

Qualifications - Bachelor’s degree in a Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Computer Science, Engineering, or related field, or the equivalent combination of education and elated experience. - Experience developing and applying new bioinformatics software tools and workflow/pipelines to solve problems in computational genomics. - Fundamental skills in all aspects of software project life cycle: feasibility, requirements, design, implementation, integration, test and deployment. - Demonstrated ability to perform independent software development and work as part of teams that span hardware, software, and domain applications.

Experience developing applications in Python using libraries such as Pandas for large projects in a biological domain. - Proficient skills with UNIX tools and version control (such as git, subversion). - Demonstrated ability to effectively manage concurrent technical tasks with competing priorities and meet deadlines that are important to project success. - Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to interact with a multi-disciplinary software development team, author technical and scientific reports and papers, and deliver scientific presentations with the demonstrated ability to approach difficult problems with enthusiasm and creativity.

In Addition at the SES.2 level - Broad experience developing applications in Python for large projects in a biological domain - Experience providing innovative approaches and applying new technologies to broadly defined tasks and projects. - Broad experience providing comprehensive analytical and problem-solving skills to moderately complex problems. Desired Qualifications - Demonstrated ability in metagenomic sequence analysis, as well as demonstrated ability in architecting sequence analysis software systems. - Experience developing software in C or Java.

Knowledge of Docker, Django, Javascript, or SQL. Pre-Employment Drug Test: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. Security Clearance: This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance. If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter.

In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted. Note: This is a Career Indefinite position. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position.
