Job Description:
The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB), Institute for Genome Sciences (IGS) is currently recruiting for a Bioinformatics Software Engineer II. Bioinformatics Software Engineers at IGS develop and maintain software that drives, interacts with, or extracts data from complex engineered systems, such as genomic sequencing systems.

A new position is available on an NIH-funded project to study human genome variation in tens of thousands of human individuals using whole genome sequencing data.

Essential Functions:

  • Installing and running PERL, Java, and C++ software packages for discovering human genome variation (particularly structural variants) using Illumina and PacBio whole genome sequencing data. Evaluating, optimizing, and adapting such packages for local and cloud computing
  • Develop and maintain analysis pipelines using the tools and systems available at Institute of Genome Science (IGS). This will include installing software and writing wrapper scripts to invoke the software to process data.
  • Participate in multiple ongoing projects simultaneously and work as a member of a large-scale, multi-member project team.
  • Manage genomics related data generated and maintained at IGS including loading and querying data from database systems, writing scripts to transform the data to necessary formats, and downloading and transforming genomic data maintained in public data repositories.
  • Ensure basic quality assurance of data and software generated by IGS.
  • Organize genomic data with other relevant data types into databases, displays, or graphic presentations for publication and web presentation.
Qualifications:

Education: Bachelors in Bioinformatics, Computer Science, Computer Engineering or related field.

Experience: Two (2) years of experience in bioinformatics tool use, software development, or analysis of biological data.

Master’s degree in Bioinformatics, Computer Science or related field may be substituted for 2 years experience.

The preferred candidate will have previous experience using ENCODE; ANNOVAR, GWAS RNA-seq data.
