Job Description:

ISCB Job Board

Bioinformatics Software/Web Developer (5 years funding)University College LondonComputer ScienceUnited Kingdom-London David Jones' Group at UCL has been developing a widely-used suite of web-based tools (the PSIPRED Workbench) based on a number of cutting edge protein structure prediction methods since 1998. The methods allow users to predict a variety of protein structural features, including secondary structure and natively disordered regions, protein domain boundaries and 3D models of tertiary structure. More recently we have been developing new services to assist users in prediction gene function and protein-protein interactions.

We have recently secured a BBSRC BBR grant to allow us to appoint a dedicated bioinformatics software developer to further develop and support the PSIPRED service, along with some of the component tools. The post is funded for 5 years (60 months) in the first instance.

The main scope of the post will be software development, with a strong emphasis on developing robust interactive Web servers. However, we expect there to be a few research opportunities at various points e.g. through developing new methods to add to the PSIPRED service. A further aspect of the job will be providing support and training to users.

Note that we wish to fill this vacancy as quickly as possible, and so it is not suitable for someone who is not in a position to take up the position without significant delay.
  1. A PhD in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology or Computer Science. Applicants with PhDs in other areas (e.g. Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, Biochemistry) or even applicants without a PhD may be considered in exceptional cases, if they have an excellent track record in software development and, in particular, developing interactive Web-based bioinformatics tools.

2. Extensive Linux software development expertise, aimed at interactive Web server development, with an excellent knowledge of best practice in the field (e.g. in proper documentation and version control).

3. Expertise in several programming languages with expert-level skills in one or more of Perl, Python or Java. Job Information Position Type: Bioinformatics Web Developer Reference (Job ID number): ISCB0315 Start Date: ASAP Duration: Full Time Status: openContact InformationUniversity College London
