Job Description:
The Department of Pathology currently has an outstanding opportunity for a full-time Bioinformatics Specialist. The Bioinformatics Specialist through software development will assist a group of software engineers with bioinformatics.

This position operates in a critical role within the NCGL/Dorschner lab and as a member of the informatics group. The mission of NCGL’s informatics group is to develop and implement bioinformatics software tools to analyze and interpret NGS data. The research data is used to support CAP-accredited/CLIA-certified, next-generation sequencing laboratory in the NCGL/Dorschner lab.

Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

50% Research Web-Based Development:

  • Development of web-based tools for the interpretation and dissemination of clinical data to healthcare professionals.
  • Develop clinical genomics reporting structure that integrates multiple levels of genomic information
  • Develop new pipelines to integrate multiple types of genomic data (ie. exome, genome, transcripts and methylation).
  • Establish timelines for development and deployment of new software tools/pipelines
30% Research Database support and management:
  • Design and manage a database for the storage of sequence variant and interpretative data.
  • Document and standardize the lab's analysis pipeline deployment.
  • Initiate collaborative research projects with external investigators.
10% Provide technical support for the laboratory directors, scientists and investigators.

10% Other duties as assigned:

  • Attend scientific meetings to present new findings and software tools.
  • Oversee the recruitment, training and activities of personnel within the informatics group.
Minimum Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in biology, physiology, biochemistry, chemistry, biomedical engineering, chemical engineering or Computer Science AND 2+ year’s minimum experience in a clinical or research information technology setting
  • Strong analysis of next generation DNA sequencing data experience
  • Software development experience
  • Experience with web application software development (exome, genome, transcriptome and methylation)
  • Experience with relational database programming and design, database administration, Clinical data to healthcare professional
  • Strong problem-solving skills; must be able to think creatively and independently
  • Comprehensive knowledge of molecular biology, genetics, and/or chemistry
Desired:
  • PhD AND 3+ years minimum experience in a clinical or research information technology setting
  • Significant experience in clinical or biomedical research environment with data modeling, application design, and relational database development.
