Job Description:
The Bioinformatics core facility is seeking a highly motivated bioinformatician to assist and support scientists with multiple ongoing genomics, proteomics and metabolomics analyses, including data processing, visualization, and interpretation of results. A prerequisite for this position is to have a strong background in genomics and molecular genetics with a proven track record in the form of peer-reviewed publications. A bioinformatics specialist must be able to use current bioinformatic tools and have an in depth knowledge of advanced sequencing and array-based technologies. Under general direction, the candidate will create and manage a variety of complex biomedical research projects, starting from raw data to biological hypothesis generation/verification. Required Experience Master’s Degree or higher in Computational Biology, Information Systems, Human Genetics, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been attained. Minimum of 3 years (and typically up to 7 years) of directly related experience. Knowledge of Unix/Linux environment. Strong programming skills with least one of the programming languages (R, Perl, Python, PHP). Proficiency in microarray and next-generation sequencing data analysis and experience with large genomic datasets including TCGA, ENCODE, 1000 Genomes Project, and related resources is a must. Excellent verbal/written communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to effectively interact with scientists from various cultures and research backgrounds. Experience with pathway building/analysis tools like MetaCore, IPA and/or Cytoscape is desired. Experience with web content management systems is a plus. The core facility utilizes public and commercial software tools like UCSC Genome Browser, Integrated Genomics Viewer, GenePattern, GATK, Nexus, GeneSpring and Partek. A Bioinformatics Specialist will solve research problems creatively, communicate effectively, and collaborate well with Principal Investigators and their team members. The Bioinformatics Specialist will be expected to develop and implement analysis pipelines, in addition to providing visualization and general summarization of different ‘omics’ data types. The candidate should be able to support multiple parallel projects directed by lab investigators, and contribute to the general technical knowledge of researchers at Sanford-Burnham by giving seminars and classes on bioinformatics and data analysis. The Bioinformatics Specialist will contribute to the writing of papers, reviews and grant applications.
