Job Description:
Under the direction of the Director of Medical Informatics, the incumbent performs technical and analytical tasks to support and assist in the completion of Bioinformatics projects and tasks for Diagnostic Laboratories at BloodCenter of Wisconsin. The Bioinformatics Student Worker is part of a cross-functional team that includes Bioinformatics Support Analysts, Laboratory Informaticists, Diagnostic Laboratory staff, and IT staff. The incumbent performs work in accordance with quality system documents and all regulatory standards while meeting customer expectations.

As part of the work experience in Medical Informatics and Diagnostic Labs, the Bioinformatics Student Worker has exposure to and gains an understanding of some of the following areas:

• Clinical laboratory workflows and processes

• Design, validation, and implementation of bioinformatics solutions and pipelines

• Continuous process improvement activities

GENERAL DUTIES:

• Adheres to BCW, Bio-safety, OSHA (Occupation Safety and Health Administration) procedures and regulations.

• Functions as part of a cross-functional team and provides assistance in completion of Medical Informatics and Bioinformatics-related projects and tasks

• Assists with special projects as assigned

• Maintains the customer service standards of the department and BCW

• Communicates clearly and respectfully with customers, and colleagues, sharing all necessary information.

• Works effectively with team members, contributing to team efforts

• Supports BCW’s mission, vision, and values as well as department goals and objectives

EDUCATION:

•Enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program in Biology, Engineering, Computer Science, BioMolecular Engineering, Bioinformatics, Medical Informatics, or another closely related program of study.

EXPERIENCE:

• Experience developing computer programs or scripts to automate manual tasks is desirable

• Experience reading and reviewing computer programs is desirrable

• Experience working with open-source and or vendor-supplied software programs for bioinformatics data analysis is desirable
