The Institute
The CRG, the Centre for Genomic Regulation, is an international biomedical research institute of excellence, based in Barcelona, Spain, whose mission is to discover and advance knowledge for the benefit of society, public health and economic prosperity. The breadth of topics, approaches and technologies at the CRG permits a broad range of fundamental issues in life sciences and biomedicine to be addressed. Research at the CRG falls into four main areas: gene regulation, stem cells and cancer; cell and developmental biology; bioinformatics and genomics; and systems biology.
The CRG is seeking a candidate for a new posotion of Bioinformatics Technician recently open at Bioinformatics Unit, Core Facilities.
Mission of the role
Reporting to the Head of Bioinformatics Unit in the Core Facilities of CRG, the selected candidate will be responsible to conduct bioinformatics analysis using workflows established in the unit or with new procedures he/she will develop.
We are currently looking for a bioinformatician familiar with biostatistics and the analysis of Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) data.
The new bioinformatician will perform a broad range of services in function of the demand, analysis of high throughput data as well as developing new tools for innovative analysis. Additionally, he/she will also teach in basic and advanced bioinformatics trainings and contribute to the maintenance of the pipelines developed in the Unit.
Most of the unit users are PRBB scientists asking for custom services. The candidate will therefore work closely with users in order to help in the design of the experimental plan, propose the correct analysis workflow and interpret the results.
Requirements
Studies:
• Degree in computer sciences, bioinformatics, biostatistics, biology or biotechnology
• A PhD in Bioinformatics / Molecular Biology / Biostatistics will be valued
Technical skills required:
• Knowledge and experience in UNIX/LINUX to an advanced level (including shell scripting)
• Extensive experience in programming languages (e.g. Perl, Python, C, Ruby…)
• Experience dealing with large data sets (involving hundreds of gigabytes or more).
• Experience in R or other statistical Languages
• Experience with biostatistics or mathematical modelling
• Experience in NGS data analysis
• Knowledge of pathway analysis and GO enrichment analysis.
Additional beneficial skills:
• Experience in gene expression network modelling
• Experience in protein sequence analysis and annotation
• Experience in database management and manipulation (mysql, nosql, postgresql…)
• Experience in data integration.
• Experience in analyzing microscopy images
• Experience in handling proteomics data.
Languages:
• Fluent level of English.
Soft skills:
The successful candidate should be able to work independently, prioritize and manage a variety of tasks, and shift priorities rapidly. Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, and the capacity to interact with multidisciplinary staff in a fast-paced environment are required
The Offer
• Duration: permanent position (with a probation period)
• Estimated annual gross salary: A competitive salary will be provided, which will be well matched relative to the cost of living in Barcelona, and adjusted according to experience
• Starting date: March 2015
