Job Description:
The Bioinformatics Technician will be a member of a cooperative research effort in the laboratory at UCSF Mission Bay. Research in the lab focuses on the development of mNGS wet and dry lab methods for the direct detection of pathogens from blood using Illumina and/or Oxford Nanopore technologies, the influence of the microbiome/virome on human health, and whole transcriptome host sequencing for the study of molecular pathways and biomarkers.

The Bioinformatics Technician will be working as part of the bioinformatics team to develop new and improve existing bioinformatics-based tools for the discovery and characterization of infectious diseases, with particular emphasis on machine-learning based approaches.

Please note: This is a fully funded one-year career position with likely continuation as available funding permits.

Required Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in biological science, computational / programming, or related area and one or more years of experience working in a biology or biochemistry laboratory, utilizing the techniques or methods required by the position; or an equivalent combination of education and experience

• Prior experience in data analysis and visualization

• Prior experience in genomics, especially RNA-Seq transcriptome profiling and analysis

• Working knowledge of application and data security concepts

• Working knowledge of bioinformatics methods and data structures

• Working knowledge of modern biology and applicable field of research

• Interpersonal skills in order to work with both technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization

• Ability to communicate technical information in a clear and concise manner

• Self-motivated, able to learn quickly, meet deadlines and demonstrate problem solving skills

Note: Fingerprinting and background check required.

Preferred Qualifications:

• MA/MS degree in bioinformatics or computer science

• Significant coursework in biology, chemistry, or related natural science

• Some experience in a genomics-related laboratory

• Willingness to work with biohazardous material at Biosafety Level 2

• Working knowledge of applications programming and web development

• Working knowledge of databases

• Working project management skills

• Prior experience in machine learning algorithms

• Prior experience in working with DNA/RNA in molecular biology, including cloning, PCR, and nucleic acid extraction

• Skills and knowledge in the use of biorobots

• Skills and knowledge in diagnostic assay development

The laboratory and UCSF-Abbott Viral Diagnostics and Discovery Center at UCSF is part of the Department of Laboratory Medicine at UCSF. The laboratory focuses on applying advanced genomic approaches and technologies to developing novel assays for infectious diseases (such as clinical metagenomic next-generation sequencing) and characterizing emerging pathogens, such as Zika virus, Ebola virus, and Borrelia burgdorferi, the cause of Lyme disease.
