Job Description:
The Genomics Institute ( https://ucscgenomics.soe.ucsc.edu/ ) at UC Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications from outstanding scientists for the position of Assistant Research Scientist with the Computational Genomics Laboratory, under the direction of Assistant Professor Benedict Paten. We seek a self-motivated, creative scientist who is experienced in biological data analysis and who has knowledge and experience in software development and programming in order to successfully develop data structures and algorithms for storing, indexing and searching multi-petabyte scale repositories of genomic and transcriptome data. The Assistant Research Scientist will provide technical leadership and direction to a software development team; serve as principal investigator on federal grant awards and contracts and on privately funded projects; apply for external grant funding; publish in scientific journals; and present findings at scientific meetings.

Specific projects in which the Research Scientist will play a significant role include the following: the Human Genome Variation Map, a project to construct a comprehensive representation of human genetic variation; the Genome 10K project to sequence and assemble the genomes of 10,000 vertebrate genomes; and the Human Cell Atlas (HCA) project to build a comprehensive atlas of human cell types and expression profiles. The Research Scientist will also liaise with the Global Alliance for Genomics and Health, which is working on open standards for communicating genomics information in both research and health care contexts. The incumbent will work productively across all of these projects, which share a common management structure on the UCSC side.

The successful candidate will be highly articulate and have demonstrated ability to collaborate with scientists, software engineers and students in developing novel computational tools or resources. Applicants with extensive knowledge of software and algorithms for substring indexes are encouraged to apply.

Our exceptional collegiality and interdisciplinary collaborations make UCSC an excellent environment for an innovative scientist who can benefit from and contribute to the rapid growth in the sciences and engineering at UCSC.

RANK: Assistant Researcher

  • Software development experience (including experience designing algorithms and developing software tools and databases for genomics research in general).
  • Experience working in and coding for a UNIX or Linux environment with large cloud based clusters, large databases, and large code bases.
  • Record of scientific publication in peer-reviewed research journals and at major scientific meetings.
  • Experience with the C/C++ programming languages as well as other languages and shell scripting.
