The Richard and Loan Hill Department of Bioengineering at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) invites applications for a tenured or tenure-track faculty position at assistant, associate or full professor level. We are seeking rising or established world leaders in bioinformatics, computational biology, systems biology, and computational bioengineering. UIC, located just west of downtown, is the largest public research university in the metropolitan Chicago area with a total annual budget exceeding $2 billion and research expenditures exceeding $300 million. The campus has 15 colleges and schools including one of the largest medical schools in the country, serving one of the nation’s most diverse student populations, with over 30,000 students, 2,000 faculty and 8,000 staff. The desired start date is as early as August 16, 2018. Duties: We seek rising or established scholars who will engage in transformational research. We will consider candidates in all areas of bioinformatics, computational biology, systems biology, and computational bioengineering. Specific areas of interests include but are not limited to: quantitative understanding and engineering of molecular, sub-cellular, cellular, and tissue organization, multiscale modeling, applied/translational bioinformatics and other areas related to precision medicine, such as sensor, health, and image informatics. Compensation will be field-competitive.

The Department of Bioengineering has a core group of faculty members in bioinformatics, and has a total of 25 full-time tenured/tenure-track faculty and over 100 affiliate faculty, with about 300 undergraduate, 75 MS and 100 PhD students. A PhD degree program in Bioinformatics was established in 2003, with current enrollment of 17 PhD students. A BS program in Bioinformatics will be launched in Fall 2018 in collaboration with the UIC Department of Computer Science. The Bioengineering department has a long tradition of working closely with basic sciences, health and life sciences researchers to pursue interdisciplinary research. The Bioinformatics Unit is located on the medical campus, and the department is jointly operated by the College of Engineering (COE) and College of Medicine (COM) at UIC, enabling close cross-disciplinary collaborations.
